Shipping Spoons

Hi,

I know to many of you this may seem like a silly question, but I need some help. I inherited a hunting rifle and two shot guns, They are in the Dallas area and I need to ship them to Bethesda, Maryland. What would be the best way? I don't imagine I can just box them up and send them USPS, or can I?

You have to use someone, on both ends of the transaction, who holds a Federal Firearms License (FFL).

The FFL's on the shipping end will insist on seeing the weapons before they box and ship. It will be a bit of a pain for the folks in Dallas.

If you are in Dallas, you can ship them to yourself using USPS. Otherwise they must be shipped to an FFL.

Seahawk, is it Maryland law that an FFL has to ship them to an FFL? Everywhere I've been anyone can ship to an FFL as long as the receiving FFL accepts it.

I am wrong. You are correct. I apologize for the error, Folks. I should have known better. I shipped some rifles to folks out of state and simply mailed them to a receiving FFL.

I am what happens when Cousin Mom and Uncle Dad spawn!

My old FFL made it so simple to ship from his business - he would pack and ship, insure, etc. for a small flat fee that I got spoiled. Again, I apologize for the misinformation!

I don't know much about spoons, they were my fathers so sentimental value. I did shoot the shotguns as a kid growing up along the Mississippi River. I don't think they have much $ value, they are older.
1) Winchester rifle model 70-30-06 SPRG with a Bausch and Lomb scope
2) Savage 1921 (? caliber) shot gun (I think 12g but not sure)
3) Savage arms model 94C 410 shot gun

Any and all information greatly appreciated.

My son and I were just going through the many shotguns we have and we have decided to sell a few...not based on the value of the gun but on sentimental value. We have some cheap guns we wouldn't sell ever.

Someone in Dallas can mail them to your local FFL dealer. Anyone can mail, as long as the dealer is OK with receiving from a non-licensee, and whoever does the mailing needs to include a xerox of their DL to the receiving dealer in MA has the info needed to log them in to his/her bound books.

Anyone can use USPS to mail a long gun. Hand guns only a FFL holder can mail, but us non-licensees can use FedUp. Unfortunately both Fedex and UPS know they have theft problems, and so require firearms to go next day over night. Much cheaper to give a local FFL $20 and $20 in shipping fees to mail them vs. $60+ for ONNDD with FedUp.

USPS has restrictions on which types of weapons you can ship (hand guns), and method of ship(express/registered). Plus the little nuisance of firearms on federal property.

Make sure they're unloaded, and I would not open it on USPS property.

Charles, I would strongly suggest finding a local FFL since you are in MD and I imagine they have some fairly complicated firearms laws along with the Federal laws that cover crossing state lines. Make sure to tell that person you are a family member and if possible show any paperwork that covers the inheritance. I never rely on advice from ANYONE other than out longest serving FFL in the San Diego area, especially from a BBS, even a gun BBS.

If lucky, very lucky, I would hope you have to do no complicated stuff. I would also suggest shipping them in hard cases, double cardboard outside and go UPS ground, signature required and emails for each stop. I have shipped 8 or 10 rifles and always use UPS ground and the hard case setup packed inside the case with foam peanuts so the rifle can never move. Good luck
