King of Cool, McQueen; What would he listen to
With McQueen's cars in the news somewhat recently, I pose this question. What would McQueen have had as his groove? Rules are simple. From his day or now. What constitutes the cool?
I start with the obvious. Miles

My first thought was Coltrane...
I think he'd listen to whatever the Eff he wanted. Maybe Buck Owens, or CCR...

What type of music did he like?
M.T. I recently asked that question to McQueen’s third wife Barbara Minty, and what she said blew me away. She said he wore out his copy of “Saturday Night Fever” by the Bee Gees! She said whenever she heard the strains of “Staying Alive,” she’d say, “Oh honey, this just isn’t cutting it.” For me, McQueen and disco seem like a deadly combination, but it is funny. In the ‘60s, McQueen used to venture to the Sunset Strip to listen to Johnny Rivers quite often, but I don’t know if he did that so much to hear Rivers or pick up women. Probably a little of both. In 1978, he attended a Rolling Stones concert with Barbara Minty, who said she had a nice chat with drummer Charlie Watts about kids. If you recall, the Stones wrote a song called “Star, Star” (an ode to groupies) in 1973, which included a lyric about Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw. interview1.html

Doesnt surprise me. I can play most old school VH and Maiden note for note. Disco music is fun and upbeat. Always a treat for the ears.

A friend of mine lived across the street from Steve when he was starting out and had started making some serious $$$$$$ and it seems he wanted a large piano for his 3rd or 4th floor apartment, she wasn't sure as she was over 90 when she told me about this. Anyways Steve had a large hole cut in the wall and a crane lifted the piano up and into his apartment while he and several friends sat on the curb and drank beer. The outside wall was repaired over the next couple days she said.
He was a jazz lover, especially what was being called "acid jazz" at the time. Last edited by John Rogers; 12-17-2015 at 08:22 AM.. |

Funny, I thought Miles Davis just before I clicked on this.
My girlfriend just moved in with a pretty nice jazz CD collection so I'll be chilling to nice tunes over my Christmas break.
