An "itch" for a 928 (though I've never ridden in one) is what led me here many years ago ;)

Cool looking drawing, I wonder if there's any truth to it? I have always loved a shooting brake, I think the original 928 is a timeless design. Porsche doesn't currently offer any sort of GT coupe to compete with the 6-series and S-class coupe, and really there's not a similar product in the VAG family. So it would make sense.

The '83 928 I had was the best driving car I've ever owned, and likely always will be.

It was many years later before any manufacturer produced something that felt as solid and stable at speed.

I owned one for a long time and have been in quite a few variations over the years. I've even been hustled around a race track in one, piloted by one of the drivers on Porsche's payroll.

Very comfortable car and also very fast, with a 4 cam motor. The five speeds are great and the automatics are better than you'd think. The Euro S model with the 300 hp, two cam motor and better transmission ratios than the US got was a high water mark. I'd be interested in one of those, even today.

You felt the weight a little more than you did in a 911 but they could be hustled down a good road at a pace that would make a 3.2 Carrera owner need new underwear.

I once had a friend (a modified 944 turbo owner) come up to me after a PCA drive and he was really perplexed at how I could leave him for dead any time I wanted to, in what he thought was the slowest car in the Porsche line-up. He was not pleased...

The new one looks great, I wouldn't change a thing. I'd much rather have one of those than a Panamera. If Porche didn't want a gazillion dollars for one (they will) I'd be tempted.

The 928 may be a V8 beast but is perhaps the most visually unsettling car I have ever seen.
The drastic clash of the angular front wedge and the bulbous round ass is extreme.
As if 2 totally opposite cars from different decades were fused together, like those custom limos.

I've never gotten that from the styling. Especially in the original smooth and un-spoilered form, it was very much "the egg". An unusual looking car, to be sure, but I've always thought it was softly beautiful.

The thing that has always fascinated me is how influential the 928 was on the entire automotive industry. You can look at any new car today and find something that first appeared on the 928 nearly 40 years ago. It was something completely new and different when it appeared, and that doesn't happen often in the automotive world.

I know what you mean. The ends do seem mismatched, and the whole car looks like supercooled liquid, especially without rub-rails down the sides. Older ones look downright homely with skinny phone dials, or manhole covers.

I swapped the 986/996 wheels to it off my other car for a while, and then the more I saw it, the more the styling grew on me. It brings the car forward by at least a decade, and looks much more modern. Deeper offset rear wheels compensate for the narrow rear track, and visually add width to what used to look like too much car, on too small of a rear axle.

I like the first couple of years. But the Euro versions as they weren't hobbled.
