The harder you work, the luckier you get.

I got very lucky when my spinal cord compressed rather than cleaving into two. And having it happen just millimeters below C4 was a good bit of luck too. Yeah I had some good luck there.

It depends on the type of luck.

I am super lucky in that I was born in the USA, to wonderful parents that loved me, taught me work ethics and gave me a great moral compass. I always knew I had a warm bed to sleep in and food in in the house.

I am lucky I finally found my wife 24 years ago.

I have had great luck with health.

I made some luck with hard work and I have a good job and zero debts.

When it comes to random luck like winning a door prize at meetings or events I have no luck at all. My wife and I went to a club meeting that had door prizes after the meeting had 14 people at a dinner meeting and 12 prizes. The two non winners were my wife an myself. I have been to 15 Porsche Parades. At every meal they have door prizes. So far I have won a child's size t-shirt and I don't have kids.

You're lucky that you have an excellent memory - else you'd not remember all of those jokes you tell.
;)

Good thoughts, all.
I'm thinking that embracing gratitude may clear the path for luck to enter one's life.
Also, practicing the Golden Rule is always helpful.

Great replies, wasn't sure which way if bad or good luck was going to be the main talking points, really glad I started this thread

Chocoholic'so reply sums up my thoughts the best

Waiting for God to make things happen is all fine and well but shortening the odds will also work in your favour

So how do you reach this enlightened state, psilocybin, peyote, or LSD? Or maybe hitting the cough syrup a little too hard?
This explains a lot of your posts Tabs.

The guiding spirit of my life has been, "What does it gain a man to gain the world only to lose his soul." Money and power mean nothing if you are not at peace with yourself (if you are at peace with yourself you can always go out and get money and or power). To that end I bought my soul back by finding the clarity and definition of every issue big or small in my life since I was 20 years old. I have been to the abyss and I have come back from having the flames of he11 lick at my feet.

When I was 20 years old I knew it was going to take time, I figured seven years and I was willing to put the years on the table to gain an end. You see I never wanted to be behind the eight ball again and not know the reason why things were happening the way they were. You see when I start something I am a voracious mtherfker who eats knowledge morning noon and night. The thing is once you make the choice of starting on down the road of self knowledge it becomes an end onto itself. I have been at this for over 40 years and the thing science has recently discovered is Neural Plasticity and that means that brain wiring changes when you work at a pointed task. From Apprentice to Master craftsman. They say it take 10,000 hours to become a Master Craftsman, how many hours are in 40 plus years?

So Peaches it is one thing to ask a question and quite another to suggest that I have used mind numbing and or altering substances to gain the lucidity that I posse. So the question for you Peaches, to see exactly what you know is....what is the difference between having faith and having hope?

Second question Peaches is why was Alexander so Great?

Third question Peaches why was it that Lincoln was a world class master politician?

Fourth question Peaches what made Hitler a virulent and homicidal anti Semitic?

Well Peaches what are the answers, we all are waiting with baited breath for your lucidity? SmileWavy

BTW Peaches John Lennon said, "Holding your cock in your hand don't make you a man." And so far all we have seen you do is Cream.

I recently watched The Cosmos (an amazing mini series discussing the origins of the universe available on Netflix). I've always been interested in astronomy since early childhood and could never find answers to questions like: where does the universe end? Watching this series did not answer that question, but it helped articulate very difficult concepts to comprehend. For the purist scientist you may think its a little too dumbed down, but it helps when trying to understand the time frame of our origins.

If you put the entire existence of the known cosmos on a one year timeline....meaning january 1st being the birth of our entire universe, then it is not until december 31st just a few hours before the big apple drops that human beings came on the scene. In those last few 'hours' before today, every human who ever walked this earth existed, every god or religion to have ever been spoken of existed in those moments, not a single being on any other floating rock has ever been aware of our existence nor have we any knowledge of any other living world. If you take the time to understand this, and better yet go watch the series, because I certainly cannot do it justice in a paragraph, you will understand where luck falls in place.

In short, we are all lucky to exist. The miracle of life is that it exists at all. I agree with the partying in Tijuana example given above....we are capable of making good choices, beyond that, we are all just shooting stars.

I am trying not to let this get parfy and give Tabs a positive spin. Tolerance for different opinions in my mind is acceptable and should be encouraged. Just because he comes across as an English Lit/history teacher is no reason to jump on his head....

Interesting post - Life is a little of everything - it depends on what you do with it. Karma, faith, luck, skill, wisdom, respect, do unto others - I'm sure there are many more.

What I do know is: It is foolish to rely solely on luck, because, no one is that "lucky".

Shaun @ Tru6 01-10-2016 06:00 AM

Jim, by definition, for me, you never rely on luck. It's entirely random and that's what makes it so special.

I get the "make your own luck" philosophy but that's not luck. Luck transcends the purposeful life.

This comment reminded me of independent events fallacy. Multiple rolls of a die are alway independent events. However, bad events in life can trigger others. If you get divorced, this may impact your emotional state or work performance, and are now much more likely to get a DWI or get fired from work, for example.

The famous example of this was the Sally Clark baby murder case. Two of her babies died in the crib.

Quote:

The case was widely criticised because of the way statistical evidence was misrepresented ....an expert witness that "one sudden infant death in a family is a tragedy, two is suspicious and three is murder unless proven otherwise" (Meadow's law). ...the probability of a single cot death was 1 in 8,543, so the probability of two cot deaths in the same family was around "1 in 73 million" (8543 × 8543). First, Meadow's calculation was based on the assumption that two SIDS deaths in the same family are independent. The RSS argued that "there are very strong reasons for supposing that the assumption is false. There may well be unknown genetic or environmental factors that predispose families to SIDS, so that a second case within the family becomes much more likely than would be a case in another, apparently similar, family."[17] The prosecution did not provide any evidence to support its different assumption.[17] In a 2004 article in Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology, Professor of Mathematics Ray Hill of Salford University concluded, using extensive SIDS statistics for England, that "after a first cot death the chances of a second become greatly increased", by a dependency factor of between 5 and 10.[18]
Another famous example was Feynman's analysis of the Space Shuttle explosion. The odds of one o-ring failing are small. But, if one does fail, the odds of the others failing are now much higher. Chain reaction.
