Crankshaft 1- Big Toe 0

Dropped a Corvair crank shaft on my big toe this morning. I'm considering myself lucky to have a toe left although I may end up losing the nail.

Did you swear?

billybek 01-29-2016 10:28 PM

How is the crankshaft?

KevinP73 01-29-2016 11:23 PM

Machine shop said the crank was unharmed. The Dr. couldn't make the same claim regarding the toe.

And YES........some profanities were muttered........repeatedly.

Uggghhh. Brings back memories of dropping a big 911 battery squarely on my big toe. Damn thing hit so hard that blood and goo actually squirted out from underneath the nail. Weirdest thing, it never really hurt. I think it was because the bleeding didn't get trapped under the nail, causing that painful pressure/swelling. Definitely lost that nail but everything grew back in just fine.

That will certainly be tender for a few days! I am glad to hear the crank is ok.

A930Rocket 01-30-2016 03:57 AM

Ouch! That's painful to look at.

Mark Henry 01-30-2016 04:58 AM

My brother did that once.
Me? I just burn and put screwdrivers through my hands.

It looks like open toe shoes will be all the rage in Sun Valley for a few days.

I know how you feel. A few years ago I was driving joist hanger nails into a laminated beam and hit my thumb. Later in the afternoon I did it again because apparently I didn't learn my lesson the first time!

I could feel the throbbing for days after.

herr_oberst 01-30-2016 06:02 AM

You've got my sympathy. That looks nasty.

I guess you have an excuse to watch tv all day

(Was it forged or cast?)

911_Dude 01-30-2016 09:33 AM

ouch. Yep update us in a few days when it turns black. Then again when it falls off.

fastfredracing 01-30-2016 09:51 AM

Ouchies ! Bet you are glad you were not building a big block...
I smashed my middle finger so good this pas fall splitting wood, that I changed the shape of it. My finger nail fell off, but it has just started to grow back. I must have fractured the bones in my finger tip, because it is now wider and flatter than it used to be .
That's gonna hurt for a few days. At least the crank is o.k.
The mechanic at the truck garage down the street from me dropped a big Mopar intake on his foot , and lost a couple of toes .

Meh, lawnmower injury is much more dramatic.

You may want to take some antibiotics as a prophylactic measure. There is a good chance it is broken, and if you lacerate the nail bed you essentially have an open fracture.

VINMAN 01-30-2016 12:58 PM

Crushed the three little toes on my left foot, when I dropped a 727 torqueflite off my workbench bench when I was 19. Wasn't a nice feeling. The pinky toe still looks mangled.

The toe is remarkably pain free although it does look like the nail has a bleak future ahead.

Tobra 02-03-2016 12:41 PM

It will fall off in a few months, but a new one will grow. When the nail starts getting floppy, try not to catch it on your sock and snatch it off of there prematurely. Nail might come back a bit funky looking too. It was fixing to get ingrown on the second toe side anyway.

scottmandue 02-03-2016 03:33 PM

Dropped a 15" CRT on my big toe... they gave me the day off...
Lost the toenail but it grew back.
