Need help with graphics drivers and Minecraft
My computer knowledge is pretty limited. Our desktop PC updated from windows 8 to windows 10 about a week ago. Now, my 8 year old cannot start up Minecraft. I am hoping one of you can help. My attempts have not worked out. We got him a tutorial program on how to write mods for minecraft for Christmas. I do not know if that makes a difference or not, but here is what is going on:
1. Start Minecraft and I get a message about updating the graphics driver. 2. I click "fix the problem" and go through the steps. It looks like I have "Q45/Q43 Express chipset" installed and it does not support openGL (I have no idea what any of that means.) 3. I uninstall, according to instructions and go to the Intel website to download the proper drivers. The search on their website says there are no drivers available for my computer. I have idea what I am doing. If someone can help me out, I would really appreciate it. The computer is a HP conpaq 8000 elite SFF PC. Processor Intel core 2 duo E8400 @ 3.00 Ghz Thanks in Advance! |
Hrm... checked the specs on the HP site and they list a BUNCH of different video cards it could come with, from build-in-to-motherboard to not so bad nvidia and ati cards...
Assuming the Q45/Q43 is providing a built-in video card, your best bet will be to get a new video card. While looking for your computer specs I found several references to replacing it on tomshardware (great site). I like NVidia - they've had the best Linux support for years (Free or not, don't care) - but then, I'm a Linux user... Check the reviews and what fits on tomshardware - you should be able to get something for under $100 and installing is trivial... |
I like windows 7 and windows 10 a lot more than windows 8.1 but if you didn't run windows disc cleanup and delete the approx 24GB of 8.1 that remains on your hard drive after updating to windows 10 you can use system restore to go back to windows 8.1
Then you can find the windows 10 drivers for your GPU or get a new one. You can install free classic shell and get a windows 7 style start menu in windows 8.1 or windows 10. When it's installed in 10 you can click back and forth between the win 10 start menu or the classic shell win7 start menu. Whay id10t said... with the added *irony* that a game as visually ugly and low res as minecraft would require drivers upgrade...
Instead of letting windows do the job, see what type of onboard video you have, google it and see what folks say. Maybe downloading direct from your manufacturer will work. If not you can buy a $50 video card that will. |
I think it only needs the drivers because the existing driver doesn't have OpenGL support. Should be easy enough to download the correct ones. If it is built in graphics you can buy a discreet card for cheap that will be better all around.

We had no issues with Windows 10 and Minecraft, so it's likely the built-in card. nvidia and ATI make some nice cards at a good price... might try that.
...all for naught soon. I ordered the Occulus Rift HD (not delivered until July) which will require a HUGE honking graphics card to run iRacing on it... ...but my son is really looking forward to 3D Minecraft. :) |
Looks like a new video card is going to be the way to go. Good to know. I was a complete loss. Thanks for all the help. It is appreciated!
