1999-2004?
 

Still looking for my 1st 911....thanks for the advice from my last post!

So other than the horsepower increase from 1999-2000-2004 is there any advantage mechanically, reliability, etc. for one year of the 996 over the other. All the 911s I am looking at have similar mileage and/or options.

There's a significant upgrade in 2002. They're known as the 996.2 models. The 1999 apparently doesn't have the IMS bearing issue, which is desirable to some. Otherwise, the years are pretty much identical. The real difference is between the 1999-2001 models and the 2002-2004 models. The interiors got nicer and there was a decent boost in horsepower.

With base model 05-06 997s in the 50k-70k mile range going in the high $20,000s, I don't know why anyone on this board would consider a 99-2001 996. You'll get a MUCH improved care and make up the difference in lower depreciation for a few thousand more. IMHO anyway.

Because you can get a decent 996 for $14k if you search around. And depreciation doesn't matter if it's a daily driver and you are you going to be the last owner.

I agree a newer car is better, but for some it's simply a matter of money.

Half the price of the cheapest early 997s. And each are priced well according to what they are, IMO.

and because early 997s have a non replaceable IMS bearing, exposing you to a $20K engine bill. The uglier 996s can get a replacement pre-emptively for $2000 or so every 50000 miles...
