I've been looking at the Fujifilm X-T10 as a possible next camera. The reviews are good. http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/7/8907477/fujifilm-x-t10--camera-photography-review

+1 to Tummy monk

but will go a bit farther to say, find her an IP67 rated point&shoot. (kids are messy and require too much gear to carry already)

Trust me, the thought has crossed my mind. My first thought when she said she wanted a camera was "good modern P&S", then she said dslr. I may try to steer her towards that anyway. Ultimately, it'll be up to her though.

watch out for gray market items too cheap to be true, (ebay, ny vendors) which come with zero Nikon USA warrenty.

Yeah, I've spent a bunch of money at B&H over the years. I'd rather pay the little extra to get a warranty, and definitely don't trust the too good to be true prices.

Kids really change things though. My kids are active in sports, I found it nearly impossible to get even passable photos with a point and shoot or iPhone. The DSLR in either the correct Nikon sports mode or with just cranking up the shutter speed takes great pictures. For a football game where the action can be some distance away, toss on another lens.

I have 2 Nikons and my daughter has a one. Solid.
