Jackson Hole to Big Sky or to Park City?
Anybody make the drive between Jackson Hole and Big Sky, Montana or Jackson Hole and Park City?
Flying into JH in March and can either meet friends in Mt or Utah. Trying to see which one is easier to get to. I know Big Sky is a little closer but difficult roads could make it much longer. This will be iin March so still in winter months. And no, i don't want to stay in JH. I'm actually heading there tomorrow for a week so I want to go somewhere different in March and meet some friends. |

Park City will be easier if the weather is so so. Much flatter road.

Google maps shows it as 171 miles and 3:32 hours to Big Sky and 252 miles and 4:30 hours to PC. But I figure they are not taking into account weather and road type but rather mileage only?

I've made both drives dozens of times. What are you looking for?

Edit: Seems like you're looking for the easier drive. Both are similar. Depends on the weather patterns and active storms. Big Sky is an easy drive, but not very scenic. Both Island Park and West Yellowstone can be very difficult to drive through if icy and cold.

Yes, basically looking for the easiest/quickest route. Unfortunately I can't wait to make a decision based on current weather at the time. I have to decide by next week.
I guess I should also ask how is BS as a ski destinationn? I've been to Park city before, but never big sky. I know in PC I also have the option of going to deer valley, Alfa, etc. but BS looks huge on its own. |

Roads should be fine in March, but a storm could blow in a screw up all your plans.....Big Sky is much closer; even having to go around Yellowstone Park due to roads being closed......
Much more to see and do in Park City/Heber City..........

No doubt Big Sky is a lot closer but the roads are a lot less forgiving if the weather is dicey. As said, MUCH more to do in Park City.

Based on the choices.. I'd head from Jackson to Park City in a heartbeat.

Can you find a cheap flight from jhole to salt lake? Then it's an easy run up the mountain to park city.

The drive is very easy to all three places. I would not let the drive effect you whatsoever.
No big deal 10-16'' of snow here is a non event. Unlike the Midwest ![]() All three are great skiing we have plenty of snow at Big Sky. Park City = Upscale skiing, Eye candy, upscale experience, good food, expensive Jackson Hole = Extreme skiing experience, Great scenery other non ski things to do, Expensive. Big Sky = Lots of varied skiing for all levels. More area, more lifts more variety. Less people Lots of non ski things to do like snowmobile west Of Yellowstone or go in to the park. Less expensive than the top 2.

Big Sky to Jackson or vs versa
Good weather 3:30 Min Marginal weather 4:00 + The passes are the areas that are slow going for a reason, and everyone knows that.

More ski areas around Park City plus you don't have to worry about not being able to drive through the park to get to Big Sky. Better snow will likely be at Big Sky though.

No driving through the Yellowstone park this time of year Feet and Feet of snow, Parks closed to car traffic except for the northern entrance from Gardiner to Cooke City and a short strip though your route.
Only snowmobiles, XC Skies and snow coaches in to the hotels. You drive up US 20 to US 191 on the west side of the park never entering the park West Yellowstone to Big Sky is in the park for 40 Miles it's 55 and enforced the rest of it is 75MPH. Even in the summer with traffic Jackson Hole to Big Sky through the park could take 6-7 hours. Not the way to go if you need to get there fast. Park speed limit is 45MPH + traffic . ![]() Big Sky is the largest contiguous resort in the US at this time.

Thanks all for the information.. I've been to PC a few times, and it was ok, so was actually leaning towards BS as I have never been there before, but It looks like now we are dropping our pax in JH and then positioning the plane to SLC anyway so that may solve that problem. If we end up parking in JH, I think I will go to BS.

ok, plan is to go to Park City. What is the better route? Jackson to Idaho Falls and then down I-15 to SLC or take Hwy 89 south through Logan and then get on I-15? Mapquest shows the latter to be about 25 miles shorter but i would think getting on the interstate the quickest would mean higher speeds for a longer period of time.

What the ?

89 South to Logan, if you can take Hwy 30 off of Hwy 89 and onto Hwy16 down into Evanston that is much quicker....don't know about road etc though.
