How to resize a photo on an iMac?

Got to get them resized so I can post them here. Right click brings up a window, but it doesn't have "preview" in it. Supposedly that's where you start.

John, I open them in Preview, click on Tools, scroll down to Adjust Size, and make the necessary adjustments.

If the photo is in "Photos" (formerly iPhoto) you can select the image, click "export" in the file menu, then choose JPG quality. Choose medium or low for smallest file size. You can also create a folder to put it in from there, rather than having loose files scattered around.

Here is a photo is "medium" quaity:

and one in "Low"

for internet purposes, the "Low" setting is plenty.

Thanks Charles, that worked.
Jim, where is preview? Doesn't come up in the right click menu. I'm new to this Mac stuff.

John, I just double click on the jpg file I want to see/edit. It comes up in preview.

Preview is a stand alone application used for, well, previewing. It can do more than that, though and is useful for quick editing. If you right click a file (photo, text, etc) and in the menu that opens go to "open with", then you'll get to choose what to open the file with. If preview is compatible you'll be able to open the file with it, and in some cases edit the file and re-save from there. Good for quick 'n dirty editing. For more in depth editing you're better off using an application that's dedicated to the purpose, such as "photos" for pictures, "pages" for text, etc.

Double clicking also usually defaults to "Preview" too, but there are some settings that need to be made in your system preferences to make that the automatic choice.

If you are right clicking pics inside the Photos application that won't work.

If the pics are in a folder then right click for Preview should work.

I set my mouse up to right click, but I'm such an antique that I still double click. It seems more natural to me.

you can also press the space bar on a selected file to preview.... comes in handy when keyboarding.
And Mail also lets you resize files on the fly (actual, large, medium, small) - also handy !

thanks. Gotta get used to this thing. Hasn't frozen yet, like the windows unit did all the time. What's with the spinning rainbow circle that doesn't go away?

Funny man ;-) I honestly cannot recall my last Mac crash... The trick with using the Mac is to forget the sometimes illogical way you did things in windows...

I work on PCs (software eng) and have nothing but Macs at home, sometimes I have to slap myself on the forehead when I forget how to do something - "how would my kid do it" bam, it works....

The flip side of that is Apple's annoying tendency to make MacOS more and more like IOS, and make it dumber at times..
