Yes, I've read the info. I know that it's only during peak usage during the day during the summer (at least here, I assume it could be different in places with a different climate). I understand that they say that you can manually (or via your phone) bump it back up. But since I probably wouldn't notice until after I was uncomfortable, it'll be too late. 3 degrees is definitely enough for me to be uncomfortable. Hell, there are times when 1 degree is enough for me to be uncomfortable. Still, they have control. I suspect, but I don't know for sure, that they probably also have a way to track your usage and settings. I'm just not interested in that. Screw that.

OK, so per Nest, they have pretty serious security on their Internet facing network (supposedly bank level security). And per the powerpoint, for a full hack, the hackers need physical access to the device.

I turn my heat down to 58 every morning before leaving the house and I turn it up to 64 when I get home. I use a space heater in my bedroom for an hour every night and every morning.

It won't. It is just a convenience for normal families. It will turn the heat up just before you get home so the house is warmed up. It sounds to me like you are virtually camping out if you keep a house that cold and only heat one room.

My wife is now retired and is home most of the day so our programmed thermostat does not have much to do. In the evening as we go to bed it automatically drops the temp down to 64. 30 minutes before I get up to go to work the heather kicks back on to 70.

I see no reason to have my thermostat on the internet. My thermostat is 15 years old and just a standard programmable thermostat.

It is a bit like camping out. My house is old. I put that shrink plastic insulation stuff up on every window in the house.

I'm just trying to keep the damn elec/gas bill under 200 a month.

Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. I'll just keep my normal unconnected thermostat

$200? I live in a pretty cold climate and I'm more like $100...wow.

No need for me to get a Nest.

My schedule is way too unpredictable for a Nest, but I would like to be able to adjust the temperature from my phone. But not through someone's server.
