Manning retired with class, something Brady won't be able to do.

I was a boy when this man retired. My mom drove me to his house and I put a letter in his mailbox (before it was illegal). He sent the pic below. It was a good lesson about change...

You mean, he retired before the HGH investigation could gather steam.

The Cowboys training camp was at California Lutheran College when I was a kid. The NFL was still nascent in those days.

A friend of mine's father would pick me up and deposit his son and I at CLC to go watch the Cowboys preseason practice. There was no charge and absolutely no lack of access - you could wander freely around the practice fields. We did this for years.

I vividly remember watching Staubach and Morton throw while Landry critiqued...I was maybe 40 feet away. I watched Bob Hayes in wide wonder. I could hear everything.

I carried Lee Roy Jordan's helmet a few time back to the locker room after watching he and Jethro Pugh in Oklahoma drills...from 15 feet away. I carried Cornell Green"s stuff a lot because I played defensive back.

Through all of this, there was maybe 50 people there watching, especially in the late 60's.

I could not be less interested in Manning. Great QB, but if he had played in the 60's and 70's he would have needed a lot more than HGH. That is not a Big O comment, just the truth. QB's got their bell's rung more than those at a Sunday Notre Dame High Mass.

Edit: Through all of this, I remained a 49'ers fan, although Staubach almost swayed me. He was, even in his rookie year (he had served in the Navy), older and different. I am coloring my perceptions here, but in hindsight Landry seemed to critique Morton with a different style, less patient perhaps

I can still see number 12 during scrimmages, eluding the future Doomsday Defense with alacrity.

I admired Staubach for keeping to his commitment to the Navy and completing his service before taking the field. The Cowboys paid him $400 a month to retain him while he was in Vietnam. While there they or Navy brass constructed a football field for him to practice on.

Great story Paul.

You have a very unique treasure, MB.

My other run in with a famous Naval Academy grad is David Robinson: I was in flight school when he was a Soph at the Academy. I played a lot of basketball at the main gym in Pensacola and he showed up for a few weeks during his summer session with the Navy.

I played with him and against him for the time he was there, just trying to not embarrass myself. I could play a wee bit in those days, more blend in than anything else, but it was a hoot. Imagine a pick-up game when you get to pass the ball to a future HOF'er.

Since I was an Ensign and he was still at the Academy (we all wore uni's into and out of the gym) I have the privileged of being called Sir by David.

He is a much better person than a basketball player.

Unfortunately now we're getting Sanchez to replace Manning. Not excited.

Trust me, it's better than Johnny Football, like Cleveland had to endure for a few years.

You might get Crapernick, too. You can have him.

Manziel has more uncanny natural talent than he has personal issues, I'd say.
Super Bowl MVP Von Miller's opinion -
.
“Not only will he be back in the league—of course I’m biased—I still feel like he has a lot of game left in him,” Miller said. “I feel like the world hasn’t even seen him get down yet. Some of the stuff he was doing in college, he gonna do the exact same thing in the National Football League. I feel like—you know you never want to blame a team—I don’t think he had enough support around him.

Sure he has talent. He just needs to grow up and get his head out of his ass! He thought he was going to burn up the NFL until he realized those guys are very good at what they do.

He, like all young NFL QBs, needs a functional offensive line in order to learn the various offensive schemes and to develop .

I have been a lifelong Browns fan (sometimes I don't admit it). I really don't know what sort of plans (or lack thereof) that Cleveland has for next season, but allowing 4 starters to be plucked by free agency without a counter offer to any of them ?

It's almost as if they are being paid to lose games.
