gun show- look what followed me home

My BIL was in town for the weekend for a family birthday party. After hearing the women cackle for what seemed like hours we decided today we would do something manly . So this morning we went to the local gun show. I went with 300.00 in my pocket and told myself " you are just buying ammo " I have stated in previous postings on here that I am a sucker for older steel/wood handled rifles. Walked by this beauty and she spoke to me. It certainly has " patina " but in my opinion in very good shape. I know nothing about it but I figured what the heck throw out a price to the guy. I said i would take it for $200.00..........he thought for a few seconds and then put out his hand to seal the deal. Paid him the money and off I went. Did pick up one box of ammo as I am not familiar with this caliber. It is a Mauser Modelo Argentino 1891 in caliber 7.65 . The seller stated he had fired the gun himself and had no problem getting 3 " groupings at 100 yards with the iron sights and he said he can't shoot for crap ! I'll do some internet research on it and if I got a good deal great if not well not much out of my pocket. Here's a few quick phone pics.

Nice.

A quick scan of the market is in your favor: argentine mauser For Sale

Settling in with a bolt action, lever gun, revolver, etc. made me a better shooter.

Check the serial - if it is pre-1899 it isn't even a gun by federal definition...

Nearest I can tell it is a sportarized model as it has the shorter stock and shorter barrel. I took a quick look and all serial numbers match except the trigger guard. Found some UTube videos of guys firing this rifle and most said it is a great shooter. I did not realize the 1891 meant it was manufactured in 1891 !!! Wow a real piece of history. I'm happy with this purchase.

No, 1891 is the model, first produced in '91. There were also the '93 Spanish Mausers, the '96 Swedish, and of course the well known '98 Germans. And later years too - '09 (Argie contract) and '16 (Spanish again). There are pretty well defined ranges of them that are pre-1899 "non firearms" though...

Didn't buy it for collector value just as a shooter and a piece of history. It makes a great pairing with my grandfathers Mauser .22 cal. rifle.

By chance do you know of a serial number tracker website ? I would like to narrow down the build date and the nearest I can tell it is serial # S4062 .

Had a DSM Mauser could hit a gong at 200 yards 9 out of 10 times with cheap ammo. Could do it with a Springfield M2, Winchester 52, Rem 37, and a BSA Martini but not a Rem 241.

That's interesting that the " vintage " rifles outshot the " modern " but there is something to be said for old world craftsmanship.

if the one you have says it was made at "Ludwig Loewe & CO in Berlin", then it was surely made by 1896, because in 1896, Loewe and the Mauser brothers combined to form DWM. So if your rifle is marked "DEUTSCHE WAFFEN - UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN, BERLIN", it was made in or after 1896 (as in, it could be after 1898).
