73 280C Mercedes. Thoughts?
![]() ![]() Not fuel injected model but you don't see many small bumper coupes. Looks different from other 73s I've seen. Different steering wheel and no rubber bumperettes.

I love old Mercs! Especially Coupes in that unusual color, looks to be in nice nick!

Looks like a pretty interesting car. Carbs or FI? In addition to looking closely for rusted areas, I would recommend a ppi regarding steering, suspension, brakes, along with power train. All that is going to be pretty difficult to replace economically.

Had a customer whose dad took euro delivery of a 75 Mercedes V8. Don't recall exact model but it was sort of an unforgettable car. Silver with lobster interior. He said he'd never sell it but I later found out he practically gave it away because he couldn't find some small part.
Seller says this one needs some work so I'm half interested already.

I think many of us in the early Porsche world have been spoiled by the vast availability of almost every part, and advice needed for our 40 plus year old cars.
It's an exception, not the rule, unfortunately..

I had a 69 250? about twenty years ago- not impressed with ease of wrenching; tons of room under the hood, but still managed to make stuff hard to access. Fuel pump used Allen bolts behind a flange, making it very difficult to remove. Lots of stuff made with pot metal.
Ride was smoooooth though- gas mileage was terrible though.

Have always loved coupes from that era. Color looks the same as a 68 280SE I had years ago. If you can buy it well and it's in good shape, go for it!

That's a nice looking car but the carburetor models are problematic to service, as are many older carbureted non-American cars. I've owned a couple of that engine 10 years ago or more and certain essential carb parts were NLA then.
Up until very recently, MB has supported virtually everything they ever made with replacement parts. In 1999, I finished the resto on a beautiful fin tail sedan, ('67 250), and easily bought all sorts of small trim pieces and window regulator type parts at the dealer. This is now over. They will no longer support older cars, (not sure what the actual year cutoff is but probably varies with chassis series), they are only selling off the parts they have and are running out quickly. I know people who deal with this on a daily basis. It's a nightmare for the repair shops that specialize in older MB cars, of which there are so many still around. That said, the cars still have a following and value, though it might change somewhat as stories of unavailable parts become common.

Good to know about the parts drought. I imagine it might turn out the same for Porsche with new "classic" parts made by different subcontractors than used back in the day. Doesn't take long for people working on these to notice.
I've since seen another W114 with a Holley carb but I'd go for something more Euro if that was an issue. This car has also been for sale a long time, dropping from $7700 to now $6700. I'll try and get out for a closer look this afternoon.

That's a shame. How much are they asking with that much rust?

$6700.
It is fairly complete with Becker radio and tool kit. Solid interior with only one small tear on drivers seat. Carpet has worn/unraveled spot by left door sill. 20 year old repaint but nary a dent. Original color looked to be light yellow or beige.

Yeah saw that one. Looked good.
The other car had way more rust than I was told. Would make a good parts/part out car for $1500.
