I think it is the opposite here. On really cold days like minus 20F I see drivers driving faster. And it gets worse with condensation from the exhaust on cold days as the visibility can get restricted. Plus a trucker mentality like they are getting paid by the job in oil country....

Apologies for sending this thread north:) Yes people do walk faster in winter here to keep warm. Palm Springs people walk slower coz it's warmer and the pedestrians are older me included.:)

LOL Stomachmonkey!!!

KC911 - Of course there are exceptions and generalizing is never going to be 100% accurate. But I have lived in Louisiana for years, coming straight from Germany. You want to see opposite ends of the spectrum of speed, there you have it. I enjoyed my time there and do not like the purposeless hurry they always seem to be in in Germany, but coming to the West Coast has given me a more balanced speed. I often think about Louisiana and may be back there part time during retirement. A nice fishing camp in the marsh would hit the spot to de-accellerate life!

I remember grocery stores. Trying to get checked out while the cashier had a nice conversation with every customer ahead. We are talking 10x of the time it'd take in central Europe to buy a loaf of bread ... but yes, very friendly shopping experience! :)

Think there is any truth to the stereotype? I have been in the Outer Banks for the last few days, and watching the construction crews on both sides of us . One crew is doing a roof, and the other is residing the place .
Lets just say, that finishing this job today is not high on any of these guys priority list . Not sure if it is like this everywhere down here or not, but you always hear that companies in the south love workers from up north . The roofers that I know are 100% ass busting slave drivers . They move fast all day every day , that is how they make their bread .

I was thinking about it. I have completely forgot how to relax. I've been here for 3 days and am going out of my mind bored.

Maybe it's our German DNA...both mom and dad's lineage are from near Stuttgart, but totally different paths back in the early 1700s ;).

You cannot rush a roux :p

Fred, if you'd get yer azz on that roof helpin', they'd think you was from 'round these parts too :D

You can always drive a few hours and be here by 6 am sharp...I have the Stihls ready :p

want to have some fun? walk over to construction site, tell them where you're from and ask them the same question.

I dropped off some boxes at my local Fedex drop point today.
The clerk and I talked about plans for the weekend, seeing family for Easter, etc. Then went to the landscaping place to pick up some railroad ties. The yard guy and I talked about what I was using them for, picked around through the pile and selected some "good uns", and he loaded them up for me.

We're all going to end up dead one day.... no need to rush along the way.

scottmandue 03-25-2016 11:32 AM

Ya know if you go far enough north you run into Canada and those people move kinda slow too... probably because they are being so darn polite to everyone!
Or maybe it is the beer... :D

wdfifteen 03-25-2016 11:38 AM

Sometimes I wish they moved a little faster. I was laying on the ground photographing a good ol' boy's truck a couple years ago when he drawled, "Ya might wanta think about not layin' raht theyer where ya are. That there hill beside ya is a far aint naest."

As far as working outside, it does get pretty hot and humid for at least half the year. Once you're used to that speed I guess it just becomes habit.

impactbumper 03-25-2016 11:47 AM

it is slow, we are slow, and we all are hillbillies.

Yeah, Hawaii time, slow pace in the South, all true.

Did you know it is "relative" humidity? When there is an unhappy confluence of meteorological phenomena, it is possible to be 100* and 103% humidity.

No really, it's true.

BAM!

Near Charlotte (Gastonia) went to a paint jobber and asked them about mixing BC CC into rattle cans. Grandma at front desk says my son is in the back and he will tell you about it but it costs $20 up front. If you buy, the $20 goes into the price of the paint.

Place is empty. I am stunned and voice my disapproval.

Grandma references the north (as in get back up there) and proceeds to hand me my ass.

We like to take our time. :)

It's true, that and the enormous setbacks buildings have from the road took me forever to get used to after moving here. I still find it odd that people talk so much in stores, and the heat/humidity are nuts in summer.

I find that cars from Yankee states and Canada slow our traffic way down.

SCadaddle 03-25-2016 06:11 PM

We're still tired after that walk to Gettysburg and back.
Don't make us do it again.;)

LakeCleElum 03-25-2016 06:18 PM

Many years ago, I was at a bar in Chapel Hill, NC.....The hot looking female bartender asked me 3 times what I wanted to drink. After the 3rd repeat, she sez:

"You're a God-Damn Yankee, aren't you???"
