paint stripping
my son wants (me) to repaint my BMW 325is. he wants this car so bad its killing him, although it has never been this clean for this long,
the paint needs to be removed, just not sure if I want to use a stripper, (I prefer blonds), or maybe 80 grit on the 9in grinder, then self etching primer. I have tested some spots with the stripper and I can get it down to the original primer, but with the grinder I would take it to metal. I did a 914 with the stripper, what a mess and I saw a friend that had a body shop use the grinder method. I told him HE has to remove the paint. so would it be better to goto the metal or to the original primer. |
Not a painter but I hung around some.
I would: -DA the existing surface only down to the base coat. Campbell Hausfeld Dual Action Sander - Walmart.com. -Hand sand the edges carefully. -Mask -Use self-etching primer. -Mist it with black paint (reveals low spots) and go over panels with a long board. -Repeat. -Base/Clear. Or sand to base and use a single stage with binder, if all it needs is freshening up. |
