recommend me some speakers for my dad's 1970's Marantz?

Well, I just inherited a bunch of my dad's old audio equipment (just got here today).
The main thing I'm happy to have is his old Marantz receiver. Late 70's, still sounds good, although I'm gonna have it sent out for a re-cap job along with cleaning.

What would you guys recommend for speakers? I'm talking good, 12" woofer two way stuff.

Playing this right now in honor of my father though crappy computer speakers... help a brother out.

Vintage speakers can be had for pretty cheap that are in good condition. They work just fine. Perhaps the crossover might need a cap or something, but......

I picked up a pair of Dahlquists the other day for $100. They sound wonderful!

NC,
I highly recommend JBL from the era. I forget the name but they are well known. A buddy of mine had some in college and it was THE perfect 1970's sound. Fat, solid bass. Led Zep was perfection.

On the other hand, I have some Advent Towers that you can have for free. They are mid - high level speakers but need a refoam job. They would be sweet but they don't have 12" woofers!

Good luck! What is the model of Marantz? BTW, there is an audio shop at 102 and Halsey that is into this type of work.

A pair of Altec 604s would be nice. Altec Lansing 604-8g - YouTube

Just depends on how big, how loud, and how much you want to spend.

I'll take them! PM me your contact info. My dad always had JBL stuff as well. Agreed, Zep sounded awesome through this receiver and JBL.

It's a 2226b. He had it my whole life. When he passed away, I told my stepmom, THAT is mine.

I've got a pair of Advent Maestro's connected to my Hafler/Rotel combo. Fantastic speakers, better after I refoamed. Craig's List you'll find them for $100 to $200.

Someday I will go for a pair of vintage Klipschhorns or Cornwalls. I dreamed of those my entire teens and early twenties. I have Klipcsh towers now, but they're not even close to being the same. Nice score on the receiver, and very cool that you're keeping it going for your dad

I still use my Marantz 2285 BD with my Bose 901 IVs (refurnished by Bose '94) as my primary sound.
Love it the combo from day one back in '79.

How many watts is your unit rated at?
Those Altecs look nice, but, the owner warns about using them at high output levels. Do you plan on doing that?
I was going to recommend looking for a pair of Infinity's but the CS-77's look like a nice deal, even when you factor in the re-foaming (which you can do yourself).

I re-edged the woofers in my Infinity Column II's and even my son says I don't need a sub-woofer now.

The Marantz is 26w per channel.

Think Zep, Humble Pie, Yes at healthy volume. Spoke to the seller. He said we can try them out with the receiver.

I'd be looking for a pair of Infinity's then as they don't take a lot of power to produce LOUD music.

Nos,
Those 891A are more low-end bookshelf Altec and not very efficient. A JBL 4311 is a lot more speaker and can be found near the same price.

These might work:

I was just looking on C-list down here in the OC and found these:
Infinity RS 4001 Speakers

I'm not sure they'd produce the amount of bass you're looking for, but would make a nice sound for listening.
