A vaccination against ticks...

A relative on FB has posted that they have got a vaccination for tick bites(anti Lyme disease) in Switzerland. I have not heard of this before and would think it would be good particularly if you spent much time outdoors, in the bush etc.

Have any of you doctors/med professionals heard of this? If not then Switz has something N. America does not?

Sub'd.

Ticks are a menace on my farm.

My wife and I are starting to see different insects in our part of the world. Wife already got bitten in our yard this month(bugs are out earlier due warm weather).
Been golfing already and spray my arms/hands with mosquito repellant thinking I am less likely to get bitten by anything if I am less palatable to them.....:D

Lyme disease is bacterial - no vaccine. Europe has tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), VERY nasty and that's what they vaccinate against. You should google this.

Been around for awhile but withdrawn from the market. Makes you wonder why?

The History of the Lyme Disease Vaccine — History of Vaccines

gchappel 04-24-2016 10:13 AM

I had acute Lyme's disease last summer. Luckily caught pretty quickly- within a week of developing symptoms, and the day before the rash developed. It took the blood work 3 weeks to come back as positive. I was never sicker in my life. Took about a month to actually feel back to normal.
I would swim to Switzerland if they actually had a vaccine- but no such luck that I have been able to find.

Would like to know Gary where you think you picked up the tick bite - namely in a tree area or tall grass? Perhaps you caught it in time to prevent getting any sicker?
Were you in Florida when you got it?

As regards my FB friends/relatives in Switz. I think they are a little confused about what the vaccination protects against.

Absolutely!

Without Nexgard (other stuff in years past) the dogs are four-legged cruise ships for fleas and ticks. They work the property twice a day, pulling into all the ports of call preferred by F&T's :D

But, let's be frank, F the dogs: It is me I worry about.

Do you actually mean a vaccine against ticks - or do you mean a vaccine against lyme disease?

There has been a vaccine against lyme disease since the 90s.

According to what I know, a vaccine against lyme disease in humans is no longer available, at least not in the US. It was pulled off the market around 2002. Someone please correct me if I am wrong- I would get it in a second if it is available and safe.
There is a vaccine for lyme disease in dogs.
Thanks

And it's not only Lyme Disease. My neighbor and my little Dachshund got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick bite. The neighbor was really sick for about three months and my dog almost didn't make it.
Ticks are one of those "things" that serve absolutely no purpose.

I got it while hiking a portion of the Appalachian trail in Virginia, Shenandoah area.
My main hobby is photography- so I was in some grassy fields, etc.
I am quite tick aware- and never saw one. Never saw a bite mark.
Symptoms started about a week after we came back. My local doctor - been in town for 30+ years- has never seen a case. I was pushing the diagnosis. Started on antibiotics as the rash appeared. I was lucky. No after effects that I am aware of.
I asked the local infectious disease people about the vaccine- and was told it was pulled from the market, at least in the US.
Miserable disease- really bad while acute.
