Roadside smog check - anyone dealt with one?

I see one in this spot every now and then on my way home from work. I'm not sure what the "rules" are - is it implied-consent like a roadside sobriety test?

I got in one 5 years ago.l It required consent. Chatting with the officer he said main reason was to make sure smog test stations were working properly / honestly. I.e. you fail and they will see who passed you a couple months earlier and may audit them ...

Voluntary. You must pull in if directed by an officer, but you can refuse the testing.

I thought our state didn't have any more money for stuff like that. I was almost caught in one but was lucky enough to have enough time and road to turn off into a side street. My 930 rolls more smoke then a diesel drag truck. Well, actually not, but runs rich

Like Ossi stated. They're voluntary. Nothing is captured. Its put on by the Bureau of Auto Repair. Basically they're checking on the smog shops in the area, and making sure the public doesn't get hosed. They're usually looking for certain years and models. The nice thing is if you have a check engine light on, they'll tell you what is wrong, what it'll take to fix it, and a local reputable shop. You can always decline, and be on your merry way.

For those with loud exhaust pipes or after market ones, I wonder if the CHP will write you up since he's right there?

Nope, They're not there to jam anyone up. Odds are P cars wouldn't even be called in anyways.

Yeah, but if he is in the BMW, I bet that is on their list. If he is in the Unimog, they will stop him just to get a closer look at it.
