Georgia Power sucks!
We are staying at my parents house while in Atlanta for my friends memorial. While walking into the garage, I noticed the cover off the meter can, which is behind a large bush. The cover was on the ground.
I asked my mom (88 y/o) about the cover and she said Georgia Power replaced the meter in January. I called Georgia Power and told the rep the story. He said they replaced the meter with a self reporting meter and the cover was replaced. I asked how the plastic lock fell off and then the cover fell off? I said Georgia Power replaced the meter without us asking, the cover is on the ground, with 220 volts exposed and it's our fault? The rep had no answer but said we needed to call an electrician. He wouldn't budge. I asked for a supervisor and was put on hold. The rep came back 10 minutes later and said none were available. I said I'd hold but, he said that was not an option, as other calls needed answering. I asked for his name and he said Jason. I asked for a last name and he said they don't give it out for security reasons, as there are unstable people out there. That pissed me off. We went round and round until he hung up. My wife called and the woman at Georgia Power agreed it was a dangerous situation. Guys are on the way to fix it she said. We'll see what happens. Amazing the difference between reps. |

Seems to me from your description you just got on the horn and started yelling.
Maybe if you had mentioned the issue and asked for a repair instead of getting blame game with it you may have had better results. It's their meter and they want it to be proper as much as you do.

Send a copy of your post to Tim & Jason's supervisor /manager.
I would think customer service & PR are important to Georgia Power. |

I work in the electric utility business. When you say there are wires on the ground (or just exposed) they should be there within an hour without question.
BTW, whenever there's a question of whether you need the power company or an electrician like when power is out or just acting weird, always start with the power company first since you've already paid for them.

Unplug the meter and they will be out there in less than 30 min to turn it back on.
I replaced the circuit breaker panel in our barn recently and it took 3 days to get the power turned off and literally 23 minutes to get it turned back on. |

In San Diego we have a man named Turco at KUSI to resolve issues like that, especially with poor customer support people.

On a related note - to get power to my newly constructed detached workshop, Ga Power installed a new pole, a new transformer and ran overhead lines about 60 feet to my shop's meter. All for $0. (I do have a minimum monthly bill of about $22 for the meter - but it was much cheaper than out of pocket costs of running power underground from one of the house panels out to the shop.)
