Any Golden Retriever Owners?
My Wifes service dog is a yellow lab with 1/16 golden. Amazing animal - her parents were both service dogs as are most of her siblings. The dog is near perfect in every respect save one small annoying habit...she makes this growl sound that sounds like Chewbacha when she wants to play. Its cute for a minute but she doesn't let up! If I tell her to stop and lay down she will on command, heck that animal does every thing you ask it. Amazing girl.
Is this common with Goldens?

We've had three Golden's over the years, all great dogs, all slightly different in personality, but none did the low growl. It's just an individual quirk and her way of "talking" to you.

I have been doing Golden rescue for 20 odd years now, probably had 40 or 50 foster dogs in that time, plus Goldens of our own. I don't think it is a Golden thing any more than an individual dog thing. Some dogs do that, some don't. We have one now that does that when relaxing on the floor.

We've had a golden and loved her in every way. She's gone now, but we have a highly active 65 lb Aussie for the farm, and he growls a bit when he wants to play (usually fairly rough play).

Bob sometimes does the low menacing growl thing when he wants to play, be petted, go outside, stop playing with the cat...etc. The gentle 125lb giant has scared the crap out of a few people.

When they want to play, they "want" to play......don't ignore them!

We had a golden that actually smiled when she was happy. Wish I would have captured footage of it. Guess the trait ran in the family as her mother did it too.
Wonderful dogs.

Mine is a Yellow Lab with Golden color and she is quiet as a mouse unless the doorbell rings. Then its WOOOOOF WOOOOF WOOOOF
She rarely speaks otherwise which bugs me. She has got to have something to say... She smiles too - I have had a few labs/retrievers and they all did it. It's cool. ![]()

We knew it as a smile (as told to us by the breeder). Others, however, saw the showing of teeth as some sort of threat. Simply the kindest, best dog ever. Still hurts when we put her down after 14 years.
