A Contemporary Philosopher... and Porschephile?!

I was listening to an interview with the philosopher John Searle, who teaches at UC Berkeley, and he kept using the Porsche 911 to describe how perception functions for individuals. On its face, there was nothing special about this -- the Porsche 911 is one of the most famous and recognizable cars in history. But then, as he got more specific and began to describe how subjective "intentionality" relates to perception, his example also got more specific, and he began describing how/why the subjective mind can perceive that it's not only a Porsche 911 but "a red Porsche 911 Carrera 4, model 993."

At which point I couldn't help to smile, because, well, it's clear that homeboy is a Porsche fanatic.

So anyhow, I was wondering if anyone had any info about this. Certainly it's intriguing that a philosophy professor is also a Porsche guy -- I mean, we've had physicists like Carl Sagan, but philosophy is a very different domain. I was curious if he was known to run in SoCal Porsche circles.

I know who he is and I know he is (or was, at the least) sort of an anti-deconstructionist, but that's about it. However, a quick google suggests that he is indeed a Porschephile and appears to own a car like the one described.

Yeah, he got into a pretty well-known spat with Derrida back in the... had to have been the 1960s or 70s, I guess.

That certainly sounds right - like the Buckley-Vidal fight of philosophy!
