Can you tow modern vehilces with an old school tow truck with a sling?
I sold my dump truck/plow truck. I was sort of looking for an old wrecker with a wheel lift. I was going to also put a plow on, and use it as a dedicated lot truck . Plow snow, and move disabled vehicles
A guy I used to know, passed away in the middle of a restoration of a 1978 chevrolet k 3500 tow truck. I went and looked at it today, and although it is still dissassembled, man, it is pretty sweet. Really retro cool, I could totally see it sitting in my lot . He was a good body man, and really did a nice job on this . It also comes with a plow Only drawback, sling only , no wheel lift . I am thinking the sling would mess up plastic bumpers as found on most everything on the road today. I am not looking to get into the towing business, just want to be able to move a disabled car from my lot, into the shop by myself . Anybody have any experience with these ? Here is a quick pic just because we like pictures . ![]()

No.
Not if it is a sling thing as it will pull the bumpers off. How? The Old school hooks under the front end , Under the vehicle Perhaps to A-frame, K member, etc The slings lift up the hooks, and lots of the weight is transcribed to the bumper also. The hooks are not in the bumper, but under the car, yet lots of weight is transcribed to the bumper area plus the stopping and going. In the old days the bumpers would take it . Todays car the bumper would be ripped right off. However if you are using the yoke thing that goes under the wheels, so the weight of the car is still on the wheels, that should work.

You can always add a wheel lift.

I have been kinda looking at something similar, but decided that I would have more use from a shorter rollback deck with a hidden wheel lift underneath the rear of the truck, and a strong winch on the front of the deck. The only problem with this setup in your case would be the added length of the wheelbase, and truck itself, which would make snow plowing more difficult.

One of our clients, Pasadena's Best Towing, have an old wheel lift truck but I think that only comes out for car shows. Most tows are flatbed these days. They can help you out with a tow if you're in Pasadena, Los Angeles or Southern California. Pasadena's Best Towing and Transportation Services - Best Towing in Pasadena, CA
