Is it DIY?
My pedal squeeked. Now it kinda howls if I spin it. Buy new? Sent via Jedi mind trick.

I say buy new. how much life if left in it? I wouldn't know where to look for the bearings. Bearings may run 10-15 bucks, a new set is what, maybe 50 bucks?

I'm not sure it's worth the effort to rebuild unless they are very high end.

Specialized will probably send you a rebuild kit for the price of the shipping. Or have your local shop order you a kit.
Vash - you're supposed to spin them, not pound them. (Unless you're standing on the pegs for the final sprint). ![]() Bill K

I say take 'em apart and see if some new grease does the trick, if not, get new ones.

Most of the low-end SPD-style pedals use bronze plain bearings on steel spindles. I usually take mine apart and lubricate/grease 4-5 times before replacement. I clean, polish spindles and bearing bores with Scotchbrite, and reassemble with lube.

Piece of cake to rebuild. $2.00 for bb's and not the China junk that'll cause brinnel.
To remove from crank arms- RH side is conventional RH threaded. (looking face on, left rotation to loosen). LH side crank, is LH threaded. (looking face on, right rotation to loosen) But, use a socket head / Allen and pay attention to the rules above. No need to muscle either. One hand squeeze on the wrench handle and crank arm. If you decide to toss them, keep me in mind.

They tighten in the direction of pedaling motion - they loosen opposite to that!
I agree to R&R wit fresh lube. Then toss. How much is your time worth? I just bought sod dual purpose from shimano for 45 bucks. |

I never remember which is righty and which is lefty. My method is to put the wrench on the pedal and ... Pedal. As in move the cranks foreword as if I were riding the bike. Obviously the bike has to be upside down or off of the ground. I seem to recall that the thread direction is counterintuitive because it's not the rotation of the pedals that keep them in but the precession of the pedal threads in the crank. (Of course I'm not that smart - Sheldon Larson was however...)
