GT1 evo race car Converted to street legal form sold $3.13 million

This would make for a very exciting commute, but I don't know where you'd park it in a normal downtown environment with parking garages, etc...

If you follow either of the links below, they include quite a few nice photos of the car from various angles and various states of undress.

One-off road-legal Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution sold for $3.13M

one-of-a-kind Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution converted for street use was auctioned for a cool $3.13 million.

Not to be confused with the 911 GT1 Straßenversion which came out with road-legal status, this car right here started life as a track-only vehicle and was later on converted for road use. It’s actually the only one in the world in this configuration, so it should not come as a surprise it went under the hammer over the weekend at RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale for the pretty sum of €2.77M (about $3.13M).

Road-legal Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution to be auctioned

Quote:
A truly unique 1997 Porsche GT1 Evolution is set to hit the auction block and is estimated to fetch anywhere between $2.97M and $3.3M.

Although it doesn’t really look like it, the car can be legally driven on public roads according to RM Sotheby’s which will have it for sale in May at an auction in Monaco. This is actually an ex-racing GT1 Evo converted for street use, therefore it should not be confused with the 911 GT1 Straßenversion that left Porsche’s factory with road-legal status.

The car has a prolific racing history as it managed to win 13 races out of a total of 31 starts and grabbed the Canadian GT championship three times in a row (1999, 2000, 2001.)

Its heart and soul is a beefy biturbo 3.2-liter flat-six engine developing more than 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts.) It’s significantly more than the Straßenversion which had "only" 544 hp and was also 220 pounds (100 kilograms) heavier.

Basically a race car for the road, the 1997 Porsche GT1 Evolution is a true monster and with time we expect its value to increase taking into account only one exists. We won’t be too surprised if the estimated selling price will be surpassed at the Monaco auction set for this May. That’s because the “more humble” 911 GT1 Straßenversion (of which 25 units were ever made) is worth well over $2M nowadays.

I bet this is really a rotten street car. Noisy, hot, uncomfortable, scrapes it nose on everything.

God I envy the new owner!

Hmm, yeah, I'm pretty sure that if I had a Dauer 962, the yellow GT1 or the silver GT1 race car that had been converted to a street car, I'd happily drive it and not give a d@mn what anyone else thought about it.

I have to say, it would be pretty cool to have an actual race car with actual racing history and be able to drive it on the street. I would assume, you could get one of those registered for the street over here under that 1500 miles a year or less show car rule that the EPA has for cars that weren't legal here.

I always thought this was a cool "story". Video could have been so much better without the music and more focused on the car itself. I'm also not sure this one has any race provenance
