A "Talk me from the ledge" post..... (another windows 10 thread)

I know there was another windows 10 thread. I really should go read the feedback on it.

now... this is important.. play "One bourbon.. one scotch.. and one beer... "by george thorougoooood and sing it to this thread....get the beat in yo' head!
Here's my deal with the borg.
I woke up this morning.
I came to the computer.
It said "Windows 10 has been installed...now for the legal stuff..."
I (curmugdeon) stated.. "F#$% YOUR LEGAL STUFF!!!!"
I was a little upset.
my landlord was all lubby dubby....
I paid for my computer. I paid for windows 7. It works great. I go to PPOT, FB, and my garden tractor website. That's about it. - and ebay,
My friend told me I was acting a little funny... I said "you acting a little funny too..."
After Windows violated my privacy and decided to update something I PAID for (IE- not something "free" like google or such)...
It asked me to "approve" my legal acceptance of it.
He said "yeah" I said "yeah"....

I denied "it"
"IT" spent the next 15 minutes of my life rearranging it making me hope to god the addition/subtraction of operating systems wouldn't scorch my computer, and hereby informing "IT" (ie.Bill Gates/Windows) that it interrupted my 15 minutes of morning bliss checking on the latest updates of the "2x century" thread...:)

Here's the deal..
If someone breaks into my house- I wouldn't be to enthused about that.
If they demand I sign a legal disclaimer of "hold harmless" as they break in... I REALLY would be pissed.

And this my wife witnessed, and was unimpressed! :D

Here's what scares me. - I'm only 46. This is the kind of s#$% one gets old and crotchety about at age 60+ or so. - meaning I am 20 years advanced in my age in curmudgeon years. That is SIMPLY NOT SUSTAINABLE.

In short- I need coping mechanisms for
1.Windows 10
2. My cynicism

Thanks,
Ron

Is that the one with the boxes that make it look like a learning to count game for retard 4 year old kids? That one made me switch to Mac.

;) My wife and I are now in heated battle about this. She is taking the position that window 10 is here to "help" me.

Me- I am under the impression that a free windows 10 option should be a choice of informed consent, not informed sodomy.

She- well nobody reads the fine print

Me- so youve assumed Im an idiot (which I am) and forced your self upon me.

She- nobody is forcing you into anal

Me- well it was in my face

She -you are a freaking curmudgeon and I hated people like you when I worked in support

Me- I love you honey

You are right, your wife is wrong, really that simple.

I have PC's running software / hardware that is not supported under 10 and there are no alternative solutions for 10 so if I get upgraded they become worthless.

You think MSFT would reimburse me for the loss of use?

You don't "own" your copy of Windows - you agreed to some license terms for its use. Sorta like leasing a building for 99 years.... but the landlord still has a key and the right to go in and do whatever unless you actively deny him in person.

What kind of computer? If it is a Dell I have factory Win7 disks for it, no need for a serial to install (your BIOS is the license). Or do what I did and ditch proprietary software completely and switch to Linux. I'd recommend Linux Mint.

my wife actually agreed to do this before our fallout...
I should have stfu..... and let her do her thing.

I'm just really concerned about my cynicism on this matter. In 20 years I will be darth vader and blowin' up planets with this kind of angst!!!!

I'm your age, and I have the same issues with some things - like phone apps for sites that work fine on a desktop from a browser. I don't like the fact that I can't delete some applications that I will *never* use, even on an Android system that started with a Free kernel. Sites that require you to log in to even see a blog post, preferrably using a FB or other top level social media account.

The one thing that Windows 10 has going for it is the fact that it proves Microsoft can finally produce an OS upgrade-in-place that actually works...

Don't be an angry curmudgeon over this - it isn't worth the stress.

Oh Haha 05-19-2016 05:32 PM

My PC was "upgraded" last night at 1:30 AM just as I was about to shut it down. I couldn't sleep and came down to let the dog out and watch some drum videos.

I waited a few minutes and then let just the frikker run.

This morning it was all messed up. Luckily a Pelican bud gave me a tip on removing some of the crap not needed and it's working good again.

I only use it for Pelican, email, and general Internet junk.

You are not alone in your curmudgeonry although I am a bit older.

Bastards!

Here's my tip - GWX Control Panel. Although it might be a little late for you.

My understanding is that there is an "undo" capability that MS allows - I believe up to 30 days (maybe 10?) after installation that reverts the system back to the previously installed OS.

Oh, and one more thing......... never use MS Bing browser. That prick will poke around all over your business, but its also bloated to bog down your fave garden tractor and pelican site time.

I suggest something like the freebie Avast and browser. Simple and its blasting fast for older machines running 7.

Though I do get a chuckle on your conversation and wife talk. My wife was getting po just the same and I knew her PC just wan't going to wrestle with 10. In the trash it went and in came a new monkey motion PC / tablet running 10, not an upgrade from 8. Helluva deal off of Ammozone, latest whatever Asus, production build only a couple months ago. Today I just upped the ram to 12g for $30. She's happy but still learning her way around 10.

I'm actually impressed with it and now she wants me to get the same. I said nope. The crux though on her's is that after the first week usage I turned all the auto updates off W10. The bastards will comply for just a certain length of time but then automatically revert to updates 'on'. Part of the operating system. Blows.

Mark is right....You have 30 days to go back to Win 7......GWX will prevent it from loading again.......Do it on any other computers now.......

Early on, I put Win 10 on a travel laptop I rarely use........After some long sessions, I NEVER use it........

That is correct.

I purposely upgraded a box because I needed to evaluate some software under 10 and there was an option to revert to 7.

My lap[top took a major crap about a month or two ago.
Rebooted one day, and it said "Windows is loading files"

Then it went into an infinite boot-loop. "Windows is loadinf files" over and over and over again.

I ran all the memory tests, hard drive tests, etc. It passed everything with flying colors. Even the deep tests.
Took it to a local laptop repair place.
They couldn't figure it out either.:(

Replaced the hard drive. Won't take a fresh Windows install.

I'm pretty sure it tried to install Win10...

I now have a new laptop. MSI.
With Win10. And I hate it. :(

By the way.. I read this recently. Scary stuff, if true. Imagine the level of industrial espionage that could be committed by MS...

While the initial reflex may be to block all of the above servers via HOSTS, it turns out this won't work: Microsoft has taken the care to hardcode certain IPs, meaning that there is no DNS lookup and no HOSTS consultation. However, if the above servers are blocked via HOSTS, Windows will pretend to be crippled by continuously throwing errors, while still maintaining data collection in the background. Other than an increase in errors, HOSTS blocking did not affect the volume, frequency, or rate of data being transmitted
