Please help me understand the selfie thing

Some people's FB pages are drowning in selfies. One after another, like identical and day after day. Same background, same face, different day. Asians are HUGE into selfies. Well, the females anyway. They always have that smartphone at arm's reach snapping away. Of course, we see this with young people, but I also see it with people in their 30's and 40's. I just cannot come even close to understanding this phenomenon. I really don't like being in photos (cuz I'm ugly), which doesn't help my empathy angle.

Anyone? I like to think of myself as being open and empathetic, but this is just bizarre to me.

And, to take it a step further, I wonder what the personal and social ramifications of this behavior are?

I agree......terrible......someone should do something!

A selfie is just visual verification of the perception you are trying to create on social media. its much more powerful than "getting your picture taken" because you can curate the content on the spot.

So I think naturally, many women take selfies where the background is less important. More men take selfies with "stuff" in the background.

No selfies for me. I worry about breaking the camera.

manbridge 74 05-25-2016 07:10 PM

I worry about it stealing my soul.

The problem is that most selfies don't look like this. If they did then there wouldn't be a problem.

Honestly I'd rather look at a picture of a selfie than a picture of what someone is having to eat - that drives me nuts!

Yeah, I don't understand the selfie craze as well. I am a boomer. I guess I am not suppose to understand it.
I like those selfie taking action photos, Baz.

I have never noticed that until now! So very true! I take them all the time when I am checking in somewhere on FB but it's more important to me to show whats in the background, my GF could care less what's in the background!

I get photos/selfies of vacations and good times etc. Would I don't get is numerous posting of selfies on FB & Instagram.
What's the point, what am I missing about that activity?

Endless Selfie's = Narcissism in my book.

I'm 45, have never taken a selfie, never will.

JavaBrewer 05-25-2016 09:54 PM

Unless it's a Christmas blessed with rifles right Rick :) No offense, wish I could say I never took one but in all honesty I did take 1 selfish pic but my wife was in frame so that racks up as less than a full shot...right?

Most likely this. I didn't read the link, but it's always struck me as something people do in an attempt to boost their self-esteem... the more "likes" they get, the higher their self-esteem.

So just imagine if the "likes" stopped.

ohh the Asians. Go to Autopia, and watch the girls stop the cars in the middle of the track to take a selfie. It's way more amusing then the ride.

In my opinion it is an extension of the mentality " it's all about me " . Not sure if it is harmful or not but if you are that wrapped up about yourself it doesn't sound healthy. Or maybe it's just a fad I guess time will tell . I have never taken one and never would..........but I don't watch " reality " TV either........I am a dying breed .
