Columbus OH to NYC. Route?
Driving to Manhattan tonight. Google maps gives me 2 routes. The first is to take 80, the turnpike. Easy enough, but I do get charged tolls. The other is I70-I76-I78, takes me south of Pittsburgh, through Harrisburg and Allentown. Shorter route, no tolls.
I'm leaning towards the turnpike. Any thoughts on the southern route? We'll be travelling at night, leaving here around 11pm. |
I 76 comes right past me. The second route you listed, is how I go to Columbus, and NYC. You might wanna talk with your investment planner,. The tolls on the PA turn pike are silly . I believe that there are also some tolls on the Ohio turnpike, but they are reasonable .

I would personally take the turnpike just because I see it as being somewhat safer.
Have a good trip and great Memorial Day weekend! |
Either way should be fine at that time at night. If you have WAZE I would just go with that as there is sometimes overnight construction on some of those roads and it will redirect you before you get there. This website might help you plan the route

Your timing should make most of the pitfalls of either route workable.
I made the mistake one year of traveling from DC to Cleveland through Breezewood, PA. during a holiday weekend. Two hours later...goofiest interchange between two major interstates on this or any other planet. Travel safe. |
Turn Waze on and let it pick the route.

I-80 is not the PA Turnpike. I-76 is. Both run east to west, with I-80 being through northern Pennsylvania. 76 runs through southern Pennsylvania and connects Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia.
I took I-76 from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg yesterday. There was some road construction, but no real delays. Traffic was moving fine. I haven't been on 80 for a long time so I don't know if there is any construction on it now. Both are decent roads. I would think either would be fine. |
The turnpike is a complete PIA if you don't have an EZPass......stopping every hour to fish out the last of your coins, and small bills, waiting in lines (especially on a Holiday weekend). I think I would take my chances on a regular interstate.
