Termite Advice
Need advice from the Termite experts. We have a rotten tree stump in our back yard that was crawling with flying insects (swarmers). We called in Teminex to perform a house inspection. They found 2 mud tunnels starting to work up the cinder block in the crawel space about 8" apart. The "big one" is 6" high. The small one is 2" high. So their quote is $1,500 to bait the whole house. Dig a trench on both sides of the wall and place poison there. Is this all necessary? I do want it handled correctly but this seems excessive. Won't a $3 can of RAID take care of it?

That does seem high. I'd try to wipe them out myself first while keeping a close eye on them. Remember termites eat your house.

Go on doyourownpestcontrol.com.
The insecticide is $80 for a quarts. You need to dilute, and drench all the soil around your house down about a foot... Same insecticide we use on our trees for emerald ash borer... Also, spray all exposed wood with the same... The chemicals are cheap.... Labor is a lot... If you want to be cheap, Bayer tree and shrub feed from Home Depot has the same chemical and is $30 for a quart... Saturate the area... Don't use near wells, lakes, or streams... This stuff kills most everything... |

Something to consider. There is a reason for having a professional outfit do termite work. Good companies offer future damage repair guarantees. There are many avenues for termites to attack your home, many of them not visible. Termite control is not something that I would DIY. Any termite contract without a future damage repair guarantee is worthless, absolutely worthless.

Thanks for the ideas. If I DIY the job do I have to trench the whole boundary of the house or is that one wall adequate.

Read the instructions for the product on the western I mentioned...
The proper way is to dig up the dirt, spray the removed dirt with product, and put it back... I assume that's the procedure so insecticide does go everywhere... The hillbilly method is to just drench the area... I suspect either works... I have only used to product for tree borers... Same product... With trees you just drench around the tree... |
