When an item gets lost in the mail, who is responsible ?
Let me start out by saying, that my local post office is not on like donkey kong. My mail goes missing quiet frequently now . Anyhow, recently, I bought some 914 stuff via e bay. I see that they shipped, and I tracked the package to my local post office, but it never arrived .
I had started a claim with e bay , and I was surprised to see that they awarded my monies back. It was small potatoes, but still. I had messaged the seller, and they told me to take it up with the local post office, which we all know is a dead end road, and I simply don't have time to chase 25 dollars worth of parts. I bought another set from the original seller, and they came right on time . I did not think it was fair that e bay sided with them, and refunded my monies , but, on the other side of the coin, I paid my monies, and never received my parts, not really my fault either . Like I said, it was small potatoes, so no insurance. When I ship anything of any value, I always insure it . |
The sender is responsible. Period paragraph.
If the shipper loses it then pray you are insured. I sent important papers via USPS CERTIFIED, WITH TRACKING, RETURN RECEIPT. I couldn't send it insured because the paperwork had no monetary "value". It got lost The postmaster basically said "so sad, too bad, here's what you paid for the postage". |
Gasket set, Fred?

Tracking just means it gets scanned, and return receipt is completely junk as no one ever fills it out, or signs their name legible. Btw express is free when it's not delivered on time. I have seen many birds on three day late expresses still delivered. Suckers stink up a post office like a whore house in San Fran. To the op I bet it shows up. As long as it's not scanned as delivered, or the address was torn off. It's floating through post offices miss sent bins... |
No, it is not showing up . This has been over a month now .
|
If the label is not readable then it'll go to dead mail.
|
If it is insured, then the shipper has to make the claim and the shipper is the one paid out for the claim.
Buyer's responsibility ends when payment is rendered... seller's ends when item delivered to buyer. |
I sent a set of Porsche floor mats to Georgia via USPS last year. They were lost for 2 months but finally got delivered. Packaging was damaged but contents were ok. The buyer was VERY patient with me while I worked the corners of the postal service.
The USPS handles a lot of stuff every day and 99.999% arrives promptly. Once lost, stuff just falls into a black hole for a long time. |

We do about $350k worth of mailing with the PO every year. We ship a lot with UPS and FedEx too. They all have their problems. |
How is the seller responsible if the USPS loses the package? Sorry, don't see that at all.

This is a timely thread. I recently had the USPS misdeliver a Priority Mail package one block away and it's gone forever. It was a factory radio I bought on eBay for my truck, value just under $100.
I bought the item on eBay. The unit shows up, I install it and the CD player does not work. Seller claims it was fine when he shipped it but takes it back and says he'll send me a replacement. I tell him to pack it better than the first one, (lots of bubble wrap), he agrees. Item never shows up. I ask for tracking number and sure enough, it shows delivered on the day it was supposed to be. To make a long story long, the PO has GPS technology that shows it was scanned delivered one street over from me, same number address. Some substitute carrier dropped the ball and left it on someone's front step and it's gone. The PO at first says that sender must have addressed it wrong but then comes up w a scan of the actual label and it was correct, (had my name and address). I'm reluctant to blame the seller/sender since they did absolutely nothing wrong and furthermore, replaced the damaged unit promptly w no questions asked. The automatic insurance is only $50.00 and it's almost not worth spending any more time on this for that amount. Maybe I'll reach out to him this week, hadn't thought of going through eBay. |

If the buyer chooses to use USPS and does not pay for any insurance, then I think the seller is done once they ship the package with proper addressing.

Is there a possibility someone is stealing your mail?
It's the new cool thing around here. People just follow the UPS truck around all day and swipe stuff. |

So far those caught have been car loads of local teens. They usually get busted when someone sees them tossing packages from moving cars. |
