Diverging Diamond Interchange

I caught this on Fortune this morning. (Warning, autoplay video with sound in the link).
New "Diverging Diamond" Intersection Cuts Accidents by Sixty Percent - Fortune

There are a few in the US with more being planned. It seems to be a good idea as it cuts down on accidents. I do have a bit of a concern regarding confused drivers who do not know what to do when they encounter one.

A different video explaining the concept.

They are popping up every where around here. They make zero sense

You take something from full duplex (traffic flowing in both directions and now drop it to half duplex. Only one side of traffic on the bridge can move at any one time.

They also throw some pretty swift curves into the intersections. I have always been annoyed by people not keeping their cars between the lines. In these intersections nearly everyone is crossing over their lines

The longest one in use here that I am aware of has been in place about a year. That intersection had moderate traffic issues before. Now there is heavy traffic on a daily basis

What could possibly go wrong???

Traffic circles for the interstates ...

I posted about this a while back on another local board. They're putting one in on my commute to work I90 & Elmhurst Rd. near Des Plaines/Elk Grove Village. Since construction started I've avoided it like the plague. I did however, record a video before any major changes were made. I will report back with another video once it's completed.

Actually, makes a lot of sense. Seems confusing but it makes logical sense. Better have VERY good signage for these.

drive through one

There is one on my commute. I travel it twice a day. It's slick as sliced bread. The first time you go through it's a little weird, but after that it's great. You really do travel through faster than a usual stoplight and it's infinitely faster than those blasted traffic circles.

I hated them until I had to use one everyday. Instead of having 4 different traffic flows, they have 2. They work well over interstates where most of the traffic get on and off the interstate. They don't work so well when most of the traffic over the interstate continues strait, then they lead to traffic backups. They are a good solution for the right intersection.

I'm surprised they didn't go with a round-a-bout.

This. We have one over a busy hwy interchange. It works well.

Metro Atlanta has had several of these replace previously very congested traffic intersections. I think they've helped those areas a bit.
