Blew through a 4 way stop sign..
I could not find my thread about this on search. So I am going to repeat what happened to me yesterday which was identical to what happened 3 months ago. Coming up to a 4 way stop sign I stop. Another car is approaching at right angles to me and I think yes it is my turn to go but this driver is not slowing down. Blows right through a stop sign at about 30 mph. Likely did not see it, the licence plate was out of town and probably was rattled driving in a strange city. Just a heads up. Just like a green light you are entitled to go but what happens if somebody runs a red light...

Must have been from Seattle.

A friend of mine and I are just leaving my house to go to Hollywood Speedometer to pickup his speedo for his Carrera. We're sitting up at the end of my block, second car in line, waiting for the light. It turns green, car ahead of us waits to see what opposing traffic is going to do. Opposing traffic is waiting for some reason too. A full 10 seconds after the light had turned green, a Lexus SUV blows thru the light on the far side of the intersection. We look at each other in amazement and ask ourselves if we actually saw what just happened.
'Course that's nothing compared to what happened yesterday afternoon. A car ran into our neighbors garage! |
I had a similar thing happen last week when my daughter was with me. We were at a stop and the person across the intersection went so I figured I could go next since there was no cross traffic. The semi behind the car across from me blew the stop sign and turned left in front of us as we crossed the road. Had I not had to get her to a softball game I would have followed and called the sheriff as he knew the stop sign was there since he was stopped as number two in line on that side.

There's a 4-way stop by my house that people blow through on a regular basis, sometimes at upwards of 60MPH. It's usually early in the AM and they're locals who just don't GAFF. I was driving my Isetta through this intersection and a lady came up and looked like she was going to blow through it until she saw me at the last second; then she seemed miffed that she had to stop.
|
Biggest problem I see around here is people who wait at a 4 way for the next car to arrive .....and then stop.....before they proceed. These are in 25mph neighborhoods. No one blows through anything but conversely we have a poor traffic flow a lot of the time.

The car I was following down the street a few days ago just drove right through an intersection where the light had been red for a while. Forty mph, without any indication that the driver ever saw the red light. Luckily, no cars with the green light were crossing at that moment. Scary stuff.

Down here in FL, if you care about your life you never immediately blast off after stopping at a stop sign or when the light turns green. Give it a couple of seconds and check crossing traffic. Old folks, tourists, etc; very dangerous.

Thom, that is on California St isn't it. They put speed tables all over the place around here. They may not slow down for the stop signs, but they do for the speed bumps. Still don't care for speed bumps.
I always look both ways at green lights and am very circumspect about proceeding at stop signs. Booze jockey got me anyway about 5 years ago. His speed never dropped below 50 or 60 mph. Tin can like an Isetta would be even worse than a Miata in a wreck. |
Three years ago, I spent 6 months learning how to walk again from a shattered (in 10 places) pelvis, broken ribs, broken foot, broken sternum, and a lacerated liver from some stupid idiot that blew a 2-way stop sign at 60 mph into the side of my 83 Porsche 944. I have seen other cars blow through that same stop sign like it doesn't exist....(and in thier drunk/distracted/sleepy state, it's not surprising).
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE ! |

We have two roundabouts in town on a major road to Las Vegas. They must have some unique vortex within as people seem to lose their minds as they enter....lanes mean nothing, you can attempt an exit from the inside lane across two others. People stop in the roundabout to allow others access....others drive into traffic circling as if they own the road.....challenging.

The roads in the part of town where my house is are all on the section line. Go one mile and a four way stop sign for many miles. There is one road that is several miles of 4 way stops. Then, going west it is a one way stop sign only because it comes to a major road, and the road ends so one has to go north or south. There is a large ditch and a heavy metal fence and a horse farm in front of west bound traffic. About once a year some fool is flying way to fast and likely has been blowing the other stops. The metal fence gets smashed up and a car ends up in a ditch. The owner of that horse farm does not let his horses graze that area because yet another idiot driver will destroy the fence and let his horses out, or worse yet hurt a horse.

Actually from Saskatchewan which is one Province to the east of us. I get my daughter and univ. friend to read some of these posts. It is so senseless to have an accident when it can be avoided. Pass this info to your children please. |
When I was in college I was driving my Fiat Spider one day on the north side of Atlanta, crossing W. Paces Ferry Rd. on Habersham, where WPF runs along a ridge line and you go up, over and down when you cross it. Waiting first in line at a red light, light goes green, pause for a couple of seconds for some reason I've long forgotten, let out the clutch and start to cross, and a Cadillac limo blows the red light at 40mph+. Woulda been dead. Always remembered that one.
In the many years since then it is easy to be complacent, and watching some new ***hole blow a red light (it's rampant here) reminds me periodically to never start across on a green without looking first, and if I roll up to a light still moving when it turns green, to look before I get on it. I'm on a bicycle so it doesn't take much for a person in a car to hurt me. Lack of attention seems practically epidemic. 'Distracted driving' and failure to yield are two of the top five causes of motor vehicle crashes in my city. Every single day I see people sitting at a green light, in the middle of a block, etc. or being stupid at speed, oblivious to the world because they're gazing into their phones. |
I have seen a few riders blow through red lights. Makes me want to cringe, as they were seconds away from donating organs...
|
My other fav' about 4 way signs is people who stop almost 2 car lengths short of the line, to establish their priority.... "hey, I stopped first, it's therefore my turn". Except they stop in another zip code...

Two guys are driving. Well, actually, only one is driving, the other is riding. Anyway, they're driving along, and they come to a red light. The driver blows right through it! The passenger says "What the hell, man?! That was a red light!" The driver waves him off, saying, "My brother drives like this!"
So they drive a little while longer, and they come to another red light. Once again, the driver blows right through it. The passenger freaks out. The driver says, "Man, relax, alright? My brother always drives like this, and he's never been in one accident." A few moments later, they come to a green light, and they stop. The passenger looks at the driver and says, "What the hell are you stopping now for?" "Well, my brother might be coming the other way!" |
Happened to my wife a few years back. Only two people blew through the stop sign. My wife was in between #1 & #2. Car number two was texting and using her peripheral vision to keep a safe distance behind car #1.

You need to be aware of what's happening all around. As a young guy, I was riding with a buddy. We stopped at a light on the edge of town. He looked in his rear view mirror & said, "I don't think this truck is going to stop, so I'm turning right." He made a right turn, and immediately after that the truck driver laid on his horn and blew through the intersection. If he hadn't been vigilant, we'd have been flattened.

In 10th grade drivers ed class, the instructor taught us to never take for granted that someone will stop or turn, regardless of what traffic controls are in place, or what their turn signals say.
I live by this mantra. Situational awareness. Never pull out till you are sure it is clear. I have been in very few accidents , caused by either myself , or someone else . Gotta pay attention |
