OT: Look what I just bought!
For years I derided V8 muscle cars. Now, in the year 2002, I am the proud owner of a bona fide, Aussie muscle car -- a genuine 1974 Ford GT coupe!
<img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/GT/GT_01.jpg" height=450 width=600> <img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/GT/GT_05.jpg" height=450 width=600> Fellow Australian Pelicanite, Victor Coppa, has always wanted an Aussie muscle car. But, for me, this is a sudden, baffling bug that I have just caught, and I don't think I'm going to sweat it out anytime soon. <img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/GT/GT_13.jpg" height=450 width=600> For those who care, this car is an Australian-designed and made Ford. It has a 4-barrel, 275bhp 351 V8 under the hood. Mechanically -- and aesthetically -- it's very similar to a Ford Mach 1 Mustang. This car is not perfect, but it's original, and it's far from being as tatty as a twenty-eight-year-old car should be. One of these days I'll treat it to a re-spray. Heck, I might even drop some JE pistons into it, too. But, at the moment, it's fine; it's perfect; I'm just gonna drive it and enjoy it and tease chicks. Oh, and in case any of you are wondering, this Ford has <b>not</b> replaced my beloved 1974 911 Carrera 2.7! we only get to see cars like that in the movies here in the states, nice car, Kevin
|
Great find Matt.
I saw the picture and immediately told myself. Hmm, looks like a Mach 1 Mustang. I remember a guy in high school had a 69' ? Shelby Cobra Mustang in orange. What a cool car. He must have spun those tires in front of the school almost everyday. That car would have to be worth some bucks now. Do you guys have drive-in burger stands? That was thing in those days. Drive your Mach 1, Roadrunner, or Chevelle etc. to the drive-in so you could sit in your muscle car and eat. Then if some "chicks" showed up you could "peel out" to impress them. Although I'm pretty sure the impression we made probably wasn't the one we thought we were making. Bobby:) |
What happened to the Mercedes Matt?
|
That is so f'n cool, Matt! :D
This is by far the best shot of it... http://www.holscope.com/GT/GT_17.jpg Congrats! |

Cool car. Looks alot like an old Torino.
I'm a muscle car guy also. I restored this one from the ground up. |
Matt,
That is a seriously porno burnout chariot. Well done. Now fling that 2bbl for a decent holley and manifold setup. Manual? Auto? 9"? I want it. You are not helping me with my problem. |
Isn't that the same model as the "Mad Max" car?

Kevin,
Thanks! I love the exterior color(s). Bobby, Well, peeling out in a classic car is considered a cool thing to do, and I plan on doing it every time I drive this thing! Not to be cool, of course, but to drive it like it was designed to be driven! Langers, I can't afford to run three cars, so the Merc has to go. It's been a great car; I'll miss it. Michael, Pardon my ignorance, but that's some kind of Pontiac, right? Whatever it is, it looks very cool. Victor, These muscle cars make you feel tough, like the school bully. It's role-playing, and it's a lot fun! Okay. This GT is an auto, and, as far as I know, it does have a 9" diff. It should have one! A Holley sounds good, along with a kick-ass manifold setup, and a big-ass tacho on the top, right-hand corner of the dash! Matt, I found the following on a Web site devoted to the cars in the original "Mad Max" film. <i>"As Mad Max was filmed in Australia, all (or most) cars used in the movie were Australian, and most of those have been modified. Max's black Pursuit Special (or Interceptor if you will) was modified the most. It started out life as a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT, a car that is exclusively Australian. Starting out stock, it came with a 351 Cleveland, a 4-speed manual transmission, and a 9" rear end. The drive train was kept, along with most of the original interior (except for steering wheel, dash light, blower switch, and overhead console), and thus mostly body modifications were made. The XB Ford Falcon was produced in Australia between the years of 1973 and 1976. It came after the XA Falcon which was made in '72 and '73, and it proceeded the XC Falcon which was made from mid '76 to '79. Only 949 XB GT coupes were built, a very rare car! Let us show you a picture of a stock '73 Ford Falcon XB GT, with no body modifications. Just like how the black car started out."</i> Matt Holcomb MFIWDP <b>PRVC</b> <b>BOHICA</b> 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 RoW<a href="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7" TARGET="_blank"></a> 1974 Ford Falcon GT coupe <a href="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7" TARGET="_blank">Dedicated Homepage</a> <a href="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7/rebuild" TARGET="_blank">Engine Rebuild Homepage</a> <a href="http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=127" TARGET="_blank">Porsche Owners Gallery Profile</a> <a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/pmpre/pm.cgi?action=display&login=Matt_Holcomb" TARGET="_blank">Pelican Gallery Profile</a> |
Matt, that is so cool. Congrats on the find.

Matt black? Go on! Go the Matt black! |
Very "Dazed & Confused" Matt!
How much does one of those cost? I wonder if I could get one shipped over here!? |
Matt cool car & congrats!
|
Great car--looks like a cross between a Javelin and a Mach 1. Where's the burnout pics?
|
Matt,
Looks like you finally found it after a few months of toying with the idea. hope it is as much fun as you are hoping it will be. I am also hoping you get it before christmas. Are you going to kit it up like the mad max car? |
that is one sweet ride..love the original interior
|
So sweet!
Matt: way to go! So, you gonna' put a blower on it?
:) The Mad Max car has always been one of my favorites in film. It's the one car, to me, that typifies a social statement - i.e. a world gone desperate and very dark. It's much more than a road movie or chase film, in my opinion. It shows where, as a world, we could be headed with roving gangs and an ongoing fight for fuel. This is, of course, not intended to put a damper on your purchase or anyone's day, so please forgive me... On a lighter note, near my house is Barris's (sp?) car facility. You know, the same guy who built the Munster Mobile. He had it on display for years inside his showroom. Currently, he has the General Lee Dodge Charger on display from "Dukes of Hazard." It's very cool, and a social statement in and of itself as it harkens back to Daisy Duke's short shorts and tied off skimpy tops... I love the '70s! :D |
Is the Ford GT the car used in Mad Max?

Victor,
I'd paint it "Matt" black if it wasn't an original GT! Actually, when I spotted this car on the side of the road, I was secretly hoping it was a replica -- it would've saved me a few thousand! Chris, These cars are collector's items, much more than I thought: only 949 XB GT coupes (that's what mine is) were made. So, because of that, this car cost me $13K AUS, which is roughly $7-8K US. Like my Carrera 2.7, there's a chance -- a good chance -- that this car won't depreciate as long as its present condition is maintained. Matt, Thanks! Jon, I'll have some burnout <i>videos</i> soon! Shannon, I'm going to tweak the engine and the exhaust system, but exactly how is a question that I'll only be able to answer after I do some research -- terra incognita. ;) Tim, The white vinyl interior will NOT be changed! dd74, A blower? Why not! I had no idea that they used an XB GT coupe as the starting point for Mad Max's ride. The fact that one was only makes this purchase something that may have been, I don't know, fated? You see, when I caught this bug I had visions of a matte black Falcon coupe with a V8. CJ, Yeah, an XB GT was extensively modified (cosmetically) by the filmmakers. Here’s some pics of an Australian-built replica that was purchased by someone in New York. <img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/GT/last_v8_1.jpg" height=480 width=640> <img SRC="http://www.holscope.com/GT/last_v8_2.jpg" height=480 width=640> Matt Holcomb MFIWDP <b>PRVC</b> <b>BOHICA</b> 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 RoW<a href="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7" TARGET="_blank"></a> 1974 Ford Falcon GT coupe <a href="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7" TARGET="_blank">Dedicated Homepage</a> <a href="http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7/rebuild" TARGET="_blank">Engine Rebuild Homepage</a> <a href="http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=127" TARGET="_blank">Porsche Owners Gallery Profile</a> <a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/pmpre/pm.cgi?action=display&login=Matt_Holcomb" TARGET="_blank">Pelican Gallery Profile</a> |
Jeez...how could I forget...
Another note, Matt, and after seeing the posted photos of the Mad Max car, how could I forget:
Although it could be a replica, I've seen a Mad Max-like car around here in L.A. (in Burbank, actually, which is home to Warner Bros. studios, Disney, Universal, Johnny Carson, etc., etc.) Genuine "car territory" Burbank is, and in the case of the Mad Max car, it was located outside Priscilla's, a coffee house frequented by a lot of screenwriters and other studio folk. It's quite a machine in person - very daunting with that blower up top on the hood. If you ever make it to L.A., come out to Burbank on Friday night. There's a Bob's Big Boy (a burger restaurant chain in L.A.) that has Detroit V8 muscle cars (real Shelby Cobras and Mustangs included) and a lot of cool Harleys on display every Friday night. I don't know if you get Jay Leno's "Tonight Show" down under, but he's a variety show host whose also a big car guy. Sometimes he shows up to Bob's in/on a variety of steeds: i.e. a "road legal" one-seater Formula Ford race car, a 220 hp Yamaha-equipped Ford Festiva, even a jet-powered motorcycle (which he doesn't ride anymore since setting a Corvette's front bumper on fire with the jet's exhaust, or so folklore has it). :) |
Matt, check this out. I found some pictures of a Shelby Cobra Mustang GT 500. This is just like the one the guy had back in school. Only his was orange with white stripes. He had the same wheels with the white letter Good Years. It had a 429 V8 with two holley 4 barrel carbs. Good for around 340HP.
I had a pristine 66' bug with Cragar mags and raised white letters on Goodyears. Completely different thing but I loved that bug like no other car since. It was my ticket to freedom. Bobbyhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...9806AUCCAA.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...9806AUCCAD.jpg |
Bobby: where'd you go to H.S.?
Was it in L.A.?
I only ask because I knew a guy in high school who had an orange Shelby Mustang GT 500, too. Though thinking about it now, maybe it was more of a red color. |
Redneck http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat.gif
Shhhh don't tell anyone, but I find muscle cars strangely fascinating :) Nice car Matt I bet it sounds good. |
Nice V8 !!!
I'll never forget the sounds of the big block V8's street racing after dark in the Darwin suburbs when I was in Australia a couple of years ago...... beautiful sounding cars ! In Sydney I remember seeing an Impreza WRX police car chasing a muscle car up the highway towards Newcastle - what a sound !! So then Matt - you reckon that you could whoop the Carrera's ass with your new piece of Aussie muscle ? How about round the twisties then ?;) |
This is cool. I honestly didn't think that my post would be of interest to many people. It's good to see that I'm not the only one with a fondness (in my case, a sudden fondness) for Muscle Cars.
dd74, I've always wanted to spend some quality time in L.A. (well, I am a filmmaker!); "Bob's Big Boy" sounds like the kind of place I'd live at! Burgers, fries, hot babes, and wicked cars! "Priscilla's" sounds like it'd be another haunt, too. I occasionally watch Leno; I like his style, and I like some of the cars that he has. Does he own a 911? It's cool that he frequents "Bob's Big Boy"; he sounds like he's one of those rare celebrities who <I>isn't</I> agoraphobic. I have to agree with you about the Mad Max car -- it's brilliantly emblematic of the fictional world George Miller created. Bobby, That's friggin' awesome! Is that the same car that starred in "Gone In Sixty Seconds"? How much would one of those be worth? $30-40K? Do you have any photos of your old VW? Mikkel, Well, it definitely has that classic V8 rumble! Like a 911, it sounds good across the entire rev range, but unlike a 911, it runs out of breath at the top end. Deeks, As much as I like the GT, the Carrera is in another league. No, wait -- make that another universe. My Carrera is a flame-spitting horizontal rocket that spins to 7,600rpm faster than you can say "GT", and devours corners like the Falcon consumes gas! Not that the Carrera doesn't like to drink! DD74,
I grew up in Texas. I was born in Galveston. Matt, I think $30 to $40k is probably a good guess. However the one in the picture is probably worth more. I'm not sure but I think in the movie Gone in 60 seconds the car was a GT350 based on the same motor you have. Obviously the GT500 came later. I remember reading that the GT 350 was used for a couple of shots but most of the movie actually was shot using a Mach 1 Mustang disguised as a GT350. It's funny how I ended up getting back into Porsches. I hadn't owned one in 12 years. I was actually looking for some old Detroit muscle to restore. (T-Birds, Ranchero or a Buick Special). Well on my journey to find a classic car I drove a few and had forgotten how bad they handle. Then I bulb went off in my head. I could have it all. Classic car, performance and handling. It's called an early 911. Bobby P.S. No photos of the 66' bug unfortunately. |

Get It Right Boyz
The 1967 GT500 Shelby Mustang you pictured was powered by a Ford 427 Side Oiler.......... I also think and have to go back to the books for this......Ford ran short of the 427's in 67 and used 428 Police Interceptors also. Oh yeah wt the dual carb set up try at least 450 hp and being able to sustain 7K rpm all day.......after all thats the motor that was in the GT40's that kicked Ferrari's a$$. Also try the neighborhood of 50K + USA $$$.
The 67 GT350 Shelby Mustang was powered by a 289 High performance. The 1968 GT500 was powered by a 428 Police interceptor and then a 428 Cobra Jet thus the K designation on the late 68's. The1968 GT350 was powered by the 302 The 1969 GT 500 and MACH 1....R and Q code cars had 428 CJ's and 428SCJ's The 1969 GT 350's and Mach 1 M codes had 351 Windsors. 1970 Shelbys were unsold 1969's that had 1970 vin numbers put in. 1970 Mach 1's had the 428's, 351 Windsors and the 351 Clevelands 1971 Mach 1's had 429's and 351 Clevelands The 1969 and 1970 Boss 302's had 302 V8's The 1969 and 1970 Boss 429's had a 429 hemi, which was designed for NASCAR and not Drag racing. The 1971 Boss 351 had a 351 Cleveland I own a 1969 Mach 1 R Code with a 428 SCJ, I at one time owned a 1970 Shelby GT 350......I also have a 1962 427 Center Oiler low riser wt the 2 Holleys... which would be right for any Cobra or GT 40.... |

The car is a 69 GTO convertible. factory 4 spd car with 400CID. It has modified suspension, disc brakes and a few other goodies. it is basically restified. which is a little restored and a little modified. There is actually a shot of the tail end of a blue 69 GTO convertible in the Mad Max movie when they are in the garage. Kinda cool huh. Paul No, That one is not the one my pops bought new. The Conv was one I picked up here in LA back in 92 and was a total basket case, If I had known how bad it was, I wouldn't have bought it. I will never do a project like that again. Four years and a lot of work later it was done. everything was replaced and modified and it won a second place in a Western Regional GTO show. It really is a cool car. My other GTO(The one my dad bought new) is a hardtop and also an original 4 spd car. Though not as modified or perfect as the convertible thats the one that is a keeper. |
Michael,
I've always lusted after either a GTO or a Parisienne Convertible. If you've got any more pics, please post them, yours looks great. Perfect ride-height, man. ;) |
Hahah! Well done Matt! Congrats on the purchase of that sweet machine. It'd certainly be cheaper than the 911 to work ;)
