Sad day for sure. I got to watch him and his sons play here in Houston for the WHL Aeros. His two sons played also, Mark and Marty.

RIP sir, many a wonderful childhood memory.

Why does it feel like 2016 has more iconic deaths than previous years? Are there actually more deaths or is it the same as always??

RIP

Name another player that was greatly feared, hated, respected and admired all at the same time by so many of his opponents?

Gordie played until he was 52 (played 80 games that year). That was in a time when the weren't all the rules and equipment for safety. Cindy Crosby would have lasted about a month in those days.

Off the ice, Gordie set the gold standard for raising the class average as a person.
On the ice, well lets just say you didn't look down when he was on the ice.

The only thing that could have made Gordie better is if he wore a spoked B on the front of his Jersey. :D

I did meet the man maybe 15 years ago or so. He used to have a small pub/diner and hung around town. The Red Wings have their summer camp near here.

Had a nice little conversation with him about the weather, etc. Hockey never came up. My son, clueless about sports, asked who that nice old guy was. That's Gordie Howe, Howe Arena over at the Civic Center is named after him, some say he's the greatest hockey player who ever lived.

Huh. He says. Nice guy.
