I lost my mom tonight

My mom, age 88, passed away quietly this evening, in the nursing home that she'd been at for the last 2 1/2 weeks. It's been an absolute hell watching her decline from a vibrant, intelligent woman, to the person we saw today. They found a growth on her lung in mid May, and she spent a week in the hospital for tests and general diagnosis. She was moved to the nursing home for rehab, to get back her strength for chemo or radiation. A subsequent visit to the hospital found that the cancer had spread to her adrenal glands and liver, with no good prognosis.

She had stopped eating, and has slipped into dementia. I am totally numb, and don't know how to react. My dad is 91, and he's actually doing quite well considering. But then, he's always been very pragmatic about things.

All I can think about now are all the good times (and strange times...I actually had her for a teacher in 8th grade), and how she was always the arbitrator between me and dad, who are both too much alike (stubborn Krauts).

Godspeed, mom.

Sorry to hear, Dave. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Mine's 93 and I dread the day that I know is coming.

If I can do anything, I'm here buddy.

Give your dad a hug and count your blessings you still have him in your life.

Hang in there....

Amen to that...try to forget the final decline while hanging on to those good memories. My condolences.

Sorry to hear.

My grandma slipped deep into dementia before passing in April. It was sad to see her go, but we were relieved her suffering is over. She hadn't any quality of life for months.

My sincere condolences.

My parents are the same age as your mom.
We are so very fortunate to have had them in our lives for this long a period of time.
Most are not so lucky.

Dave, this is strange that I am posting as I haven't been here in a while. I too, wish to send you my sincere wish. I hope you will receive the comfort you are needing. Please know I KNOW your pain. May 31st my 95 y.o. mother caught the train. For nearly five years I drove one weekend day to assist her with her chores. It would be a travel I learned to enjoy. Dave, your the lucky one! You have fond exciting memories that you can relive anytime. Your mom I am sure is proud of you and would want you to continue with your life enjoying every minute of it.
I would call my mom EVERY day at lunch to see how she was and to let her know someone is thinking of her. I miss that. It has been the hardest thing to overcome because it became a habit of love. I have resigned from my job to GO on with my life.
Our parents have guided us to where we are today and want us to enjoy this life as they did. Remember "memories are the savings account to life" ms
I wish you well in your healing and if you need support feel free to contact me. Peace and comfort to you and your family.

Very sorry to hear this. It sounds like she had a good, long life right up until almost the end but that doesn't assuage the pain right now. I'm sure you were a good son.
