Remington 783 in .270

First gun I borrowed when I started hunting was a Remington .270 Always liked it and with the nerve damage to my shoulder I was looking for a lighter caliber to shoot with.

As kids, my brother and I hunted a lot. He had a scoped .270...I liked it and used it more often than he did.

.270's are great. Their best attribute is a pretty noticeable reduction in recoil (in similar weight rifles) from the .30-'06. There are an endless variety of loads available as well, right up there with what's available in .30-'06. One of the all-time easiest and most rewarding to hand load for, too, if you are into that. Not fussy in the least.

My long-time hunting partner has used his dad's old early '50's vintage M70 Featherweight in .270 for about the last 30 years. He's a rather slight, boney guy, and not all that tolerant of recoil. It's served him well on almost everything we have hunted. Oh, he will still grab his similar vintage M70 Alaskan in .375 when we are going after "that kind" of stuff, but as we both age, the size and "attitude" limit of what he will hunt with the .270 keeps going up. Hasn't let him down yet. Here I've played with going on 30 different calibers in the course of my hunting career, and he just keeps grabbing that .270.

We have a Model 700 in .270 for when our youngest gets a little older. I think the scope on it has something loose inside because it was shooting an 8" group at 100 yards off a good rest.

I don't know of anything in the lower 48 you couldn't hunt with it. Maybe not out as far as a 220gr 30-06, but still out to reasonable ranges.

How do you like the synthetic stock?

I looked at a 700 last year and didn't like the fit and finish. The 783 is one of the first guns out of the new Kentucky manufacturing facility and it appears Remington is doing a good job.

As to the stock this one will be used for pushing bush and all the other fun things associated with hunting. With a wood stock you can refinish it. A synthetic you replace it. I'll let the next owner worry about it. :)

My nephew got a synthetic stocked one for Christmas in 30-06 a couple years ago and is a really good shooter. The stock felt, funny. I am sure out hunting it would be a great one. Nice and light to haul around as well.

Our .270 is an old one and is an inheritance.

So what do you plan to take home with the .270?

Whitetail. I have another house right on the Saskatchewan/Manitoba/USA Border Lots of flat open country. The closet town in the USA is Antler, ND. There is a reason it has that name. :)

How many folks in Antler, ND now...50?
I grew up in ND. Been hunting and fishing a few times around Manitoba.
Did that white supremacist group ever buy property and settle in Antler?
Flat land, I'll say. You can drive for several hours, turn around and see where you came from. ;)
One of the last truly hunting frontiers in America. 250 lb. Whitetail Deer.
Also Moose, Elk, Caribou, Black Bear, game birds, etc.
Good people up in that region, too.

So, what exactly is a 783? How does it differ from a M700?

Just a few years ago, a struggling Remington introduced their "798", or something like that. Touted it as a "true Mauser (M98) action". Turns out they were merely importing cheap junk from Yugoslavia and re-badging them as "Remington".

Let's not forget the horrible things they did to Marlin, either. Worst rifles "Marlin" has ever made, by a longshot.

Then there is Kenny Jarrett. He made bank modifying M700's and "accrurizing" them into his "bean field" rifles. He gave up on Remington quality and was forced to start making his own actions.

I sure hope Remington has recovered from those dark years. That would be really good news. Acquisition by The Leisure Group, or whoever the hell it is, has damn near killed them.

Pff - try a .300 win mag with a 130 grain bullet - >3500 fps ...

But kidding aside, I'd like something a little smaller. I am thinking .243 in some mountain rifle setup - ultra light ...

Just like vash, I don't need another rifle. I bought one high power rifle saying it will kill anything in north america - one and done!
