The biggest "material" mistake of your life?
 

Seeing pix of the great garages some of you have reminds me that buying a house with no garage was a HUGE mistake. (another was selling my Precision bass for tuition but that's another story).

Selling a bunch of longhoods about a year too early!!

Not doing the even trade of my Mini-14 for a FN-FNC in 1988...

And lots of others...

Doing renos at my old house without resale as a consideration, because I was "never gonna sell". You'd think I'd know better.

opting out of the longhood game right before it went nuts was big. a sweet all original E in wonderful shape would've been about $40k. I was thinking track and wandered into the spec Miata realm and ended up doing nothing. Frustrating.

Not listening to my self on buying more properties in Toronto !!!! Should have bought more.

Sold my 1961 VW 23-window deluxe microbus, nicely modded (lowered, Fuchs, big engine, safaris, etc.) to pay off my college loans. Obviously, it wasn't a mistake to get out of debt, but I sold an asset that I dearly loved (and miss to this day) and completely missed the crazy appreciation these things have witnessed...I'll likely never be able to afford another.

I bought my 930 right, but then spent a fortune on mods and fell victim to the slippery slope of "while you're in there" during an engine rebuild. I of course missed the timing on that market, but did okay considering it was a modded car.

I was too generous during my divorce; I will stop there.

Sold in the Early '80's for $8,500..........Felt good as I had doubled my money:

I could have married a woman who had a wealthy, connected family when I was about 20.

Oh, and I traded a '65 VW bus for the one of the only Peugeot 304's imported into the US.

I'll never leave this place... I'm not selling yet but I'm not sure I've been smart with my $$.

I've sold a few cars that I'll never be able to afford again and before the market was hot. Oh well.

Selling the 924S. It had a flagged title (former theft?) but would have made a great parts car for a late 944 with a clean one + sell the rest to someone who wants to build a racecar.

Oil pressure was getting lower at idle as it got closer to 200K so service would be needed before long. That and the dash were the only real things wrong with it.

Selling my '70 911S racecar as a racecar. Should have turned it into an RGruppe car and made a fortune.

Not investing enough in my 20's.

Bought a house in Coronado, Ca for $175,000 in 1983. I was an Ensign and used proceeds from the sale of the white water rafting company I owned in college to purchase it. Mortgage was $50,000.

Sold it in 1988 for what I thought was a lot of money.

buying a 944 turbo instead of a 3.2L 911 4 years ago.

i was looking at high teens 3.2L carreras all day. back then they were CHEAP. i should have bought in, and had the car quickly at least double in value. now finding a good g50 3.2L is a 40 grand car ....

i mean i love my 944 turbo, i really do. its actually probably a better car in every way than a g50 3.2L ... but man, be nice to have that kind of equity in a 911 right now.

No real biggies:

Wife and I bought a house that we couldn't afford in 2003, sold in 2005 after a few years of being house poor.

Bought a brand new car that we couldn't afford in 2003, sold to Paul (Seahawk) a few years later.

Screwed off and didn't finish college the first time, had to go back with a wife and kid.

In the end they were all good opportunities to learn from mistakes, so I have that going for me.

loss of tax free retirement income - 1.05m
and. we now live in a city that sucks.

Not selling my longhood earlier. I was never into the car to make money.
