Comcast vs AT&T Internet and email question...

We just moved into our new home yesterday and have one choice for Internet...Comcast.

I have several @bellsouth.net email addresses, which I've had for 16 years and everything is tied to. How can I keep the same email addresses if we don't have AT&T here? Or am I SOL?

Your old email address came with your ATT service?

You need to call them and find out if there is a way to retain it.

Possible they may not require an active ATT service subscription

Call before you close the old account or if you already have closed it call asap.

I don't know if you can keep it or not. You probably could pay a fee to have emails forwarded. I would just bite the bullet and get a gmail account, send all your contacts notification of your new address, and keep the old one for a bit.

10:1, it'll take ATT a while (possibly months) to turn off or delete your old email. So for a while, it will probably keep working. You may also be able to put a forwarder or at least a auto-reply that says "my new email is xxxxxxx".

I would start getting ready to change your email. I suspect you won't be able to keep the old one indefinitely. I'd suggest a gmail account that way you are service provider agnostic and should be able to keep it forever.

When I got a gmail account as a backup, I downloaded all my contacts, archived, etc., etc. into it. A search should tell you how to do it. I'm no techy when it comes to these things, but that's my suggestion.

I don't know the answer,

But I do suggest that a fresh email address

is actually a lot less painful than you think, and actually a little liberating.

Thanks guys.

I haven't done any homework on it but figured PPOT had answers to start with.

I've got another question about Comcast vs DirecTV I'll start another thread on.

In fairness, COMCAST is about OK for internet... Not slow, fairly reliable. Not FIOS good, but better than DSL ! If you can, (assuming minimal skills in setup) buy a modem yourself (save $10+ a mo) with Wifi. Otherwise their pathetic little cable modem wants to see one PC *only*, and requires you to spoof the MAC address of that PC to the router... Comcast TV sucks and costs $$$.... But internet is not too bad...

That said I'd switch in a jiffy is Verizon FIOs would dare to compete here

Deschodt, I ordered the modem to make the install easier. Should I go get one? What type etc?

most ISP's have a list of compatible modems look for the list of highest performance and I usually get the matching high performance router to go with it, oh and gmail is the way to go

Deschodt 06-20-2016 10:31 AM

What he said ^ !

I have not done it yet so I cannot tell you a specific model, but if you google "comcast (Xfinity?) cable modem WIfi comparible" you will undoubtedly find something.

I'm just saying their base modem is $hite. At least in my area, it attaches to one MAC address (of a primary PC) and that's all it talks to... If you were put in a router in between modem and PC (wifi or not), it will not play nice until you spoof that mac address... It's not hard to do, it's just hard to figure out why you need to do that unless you understand networking or use the correct google keywords ;-) I might be digging a hole for myself here...

Buying a nicer modem that includes Wifi is a great way to 1) save $10 a month and 2) avoid that problem each time you futz with your network and try to reinvent the fix. Either condition being true is a good reason to do it ! Option C is to rent their wifi modem for even more $$$...

Find a DOCSIS 3.0 on the list. It will give you the longest life and highest capability.

I think all of the Arris/Motorola Surfboard Cable modems are on the list. I have Comcast and I'm using a SB6141. Recertified from Amazon $39.99. It can bond 8 channels for up to 300 MB/s.

The SB6183 can bond 16 channels for up to 600 Mb/s downstream.

if your iphone and all that icloud crap is tied to your ATT account..

oh good luck. if you figure out how to change it completely in your phone, please let me know how to do it.

i think i'm iFcuked.
