Help me pick the best route home

I am here at Porsche Parade in Jay Peak, Vermont. We have driven the 911 over 3000 miles to get here and we hit all the New England states which was the goal.

Soon we will need to start the trek home to Oklahoma City. Direct and fast as possible. No more sight seeing, just get there.

It is 1,650 miles or so using the GPS or Google Earth. The way to get there varies a lot. That is what I would like help planning.

I don't have an EZ-pass so any toll routes in the NE will be with cash, and unless there is a solid reason to use one I would like to avoid them. Once we get to Oklahoma, the turnpike from MO, to home is no big deal since I have the Pikepass for Oklahoma.

What route would you recommend. One route goes close or through Chicago, another Detroit. Another goes through a lot of Canada.

OK you road warriors, what say you?

Well, threads like these are catnip to me:)

If you just want to make tracks:

I'd roll Int 87 to Int 88 to Int 81 to Int 40.

The northern route is Int 70.

Alternate route are Int 64 out of Lexington, Va to Int 44.

If you have time, let me know!

Shortest
Drop down to 90 (NY Thruway) to Cleveland 271 to 71 then 70 to 44

1767.4 miles

Got ahead of myself
Take 91 south from Jay to Rt 4 west into N.Y. then Rt149 to 87 south.
You can go to Albany a pick up 90 or get off 87 at exit 15 and take Rt 29 to Johnstown and 30 to the Thruway ( I-90).

There is no quick and direct route, I'd follow Pete's advice since he has the most experience as a trucker. :)

aren't 149 and 29 two lane blacktop secondaries? I'll second Seahawks reco. 81 is boring but it's a straight shot to 40 with lots of services nearby.

what is your time frame, "as fast as possible" could mean many things.
Do you have to be at work on Monday?
If yes i'd do my best to recreate the Cannonball.
If no, how many interesting roads could i drive?
more information is needed.

We have three days and want to do two long days and a short Sunday and home to see the dogs!

Avoid the Windsor to Chicago corridor at all costs. I-80 across Pa into Ohio, I-71 south to I-70 west isn't a bad route traffic wise and the roads are all good.

Avoid Toronto at all cost.

Some of the worst traffic in North America! Seriously, L.A. and NYC have nothing comparable.

North to Thunder Bay, come back in Saulet Ste Marrie.

Interesting choice. That would add over 200 miles to the trip to go home to OKC through Sault Ste. Marrie. I looked at several of the Canada options and they all end up going through Chicago area. I really want to avoid that from all the advice I have heard.

Right now it is looking like we will try going around Lake Champlain ans South to Harrisburg, PA and the west. That could change if someone adds in more advice. I am evaluating all the options!

Thanks all for the input! Keep em coming.

Either way.
Just avoid the big metro areas.

That would be west on the PA turnpike, which I would avoid. I drive it 4-5 times a year, the road is narrow, not it great shape, and it's expensive - $19.00 for Harrisburg to New Stanton (I-70). I would take I-80 east into Ohio.

^^ this.. will give up to the minute best routing based on current traffic/construction conditions.

304065 06-21-2016 07:35 AM

I drove home last night late, took 91 south to 87-- 87 has a bunch of construction, single lane, so avoid if you can- it's published on Waze and Google Maps.
