I thought I would post an update. This morning we took Dexter to the vet that performed the surgery for his last " follow up " visit . Dexter is walking very well but still wobbly at times. The surgeon that performed the surgery looked him over and told us no restrictions other than don't let him jump up/off furniture. Other than that wide open ! Everyone at the vets office was quite impressed on how quickly he has come so far. So now we are going to walk D-Dawg more so we can strengthen his rear legs but we are all happy campers :D . He's sound asleep on the couch under one of the doggie blankets he sure is in his happy place .

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a bit "trepidationally" challenged clicking on this link.

Great news.

F'ing dogs: Worth every penny.

I managed one for two. Both were extremely aged. Both were sick.
Still cried like a baby both times.

Haven't had another dog for a year now because I can't face the thought of having to do it again.

I feel ya...I think. I've only had my pup since February. The mere thought of that day coming (hopefully, a long, long time down the road) is enough to bring tears to my eyes. Yep...even as I type this. :(

I know what you mean. If they give you more joy during their lifetime, does that offset the pain that you feel at the end?

At only 6 years old, our B.C. looks strong and is very active. She doing her high alert pose this morning before my wife took her on her trail run.

Glad to hear that Dexter is on the mend!!!!:)

Our Sherlock had surgery about 7-8 years ago for a back issue. He's still a little wobbly, but not much. I'd put him at 95-97% back to normal. He takes a bit longer to poo, but gets the job done. He's a bit more unsteady when he hikes to pee. He can walk, trot and run (albeit a little slower than before).

We also did some physio-therapy with him after he got back on his feet. A lady that worked at the kennel where we'd take the dogs to get groomed was a physical therapist for people and suggested several things for us to do with him including stretching for the back legs. We also bought some really soft foam to get him to walk on (was unsteady and required him to concentrate on balance more or something like that).

Got any pics of Dex's recovery?

Unfortunately we had a major issue yesterday while I was at work. My wife was home with the three dogs and let them outside as normal . After a few minutes our three dogs were barking through the fence at the neighbors dogs , normally when this happens Dexter works himself into quite the frenzy . The three dogs came in and slept for most of the afternoon. Around 3:00 my wife notices Dexter is whining/crying like he's in pain. She went over to his dog bed to pet him and he yelped when she touched near his ribs/hind quarters. Also noticed Dexter is not moving his rear legs just dragging them. I get home from work and Dexter tries to greet me at the door but he has to drag himself across the hardwood floor to get to me. We had a long night as Dexter could not get comfortable. Woke up this morning and he's the same condition so I have already called in a vacation day from work and we're waiting for the vets office to open. I don't have a good feeling about this :( Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst............I feel sick .

Oh man, sorry to hear that Dexter isn't doing so well this morning.
Hope it is something that can be looked after.

pc100porsche 10-19-2016 03:19 AM

I hope it works out OK for Dexter and you.

widgeon13 10-19-2016 03:28 AM

sorry to hear this.

masraum 10-19-2016 03:31 AM

Finger's crossed and prayers sent. Go Dex, you can pull through!

rfuerst911sc 10-19-2016 04:15 AM

Just called the vets office they don't open until 9:00 so more time to watch Dexter be in pain :( , man this sucks ! I'm really struggling with trying to stay positive this time feels different. I hope I am wrong .

recycled sixtie 10-19-2016 05:18 AM

I hate to see animals suffer. The vet will know what is the best course of action.

KevinTodd 10-19-2016 05:52 AM

You and Dex are in our thoughts.....
