Traded/Sold my C4S to a buddy yesterday

I owned this 2004 C4S for several years. I've done quite a bit of work on it myself, water pump, engine mounts, stereo upgrade, exhaust refresh, sport cats, plugs/coil packs, much more..... Winter 2020 it went to my Indy and got a rebuilt trans and all the while you're in there stuff and also a refresh on the shocks/springs/mounts. Currently sitting at 106k. I thought I'd keep this thing forever but a buddy from Portland emailed last week and asked if I'd consider selling it. It's been my daily driver for a year or so. With only a 5 mile RT commute, it barely warmed up by the time I got to work. Many good weather days I bike to work or take the 914 or 356 instead.

I thought hard about it and decided I could handle selling it. What to replace it with? I still need a more modern car for the winter and longer road trips. Just so happens he has a very low mile 2012 Infiniti G37 AWD sport edition sedan he was getting ready to sell. We did a trade plus cash deal. The Infiniti is a bit of a beast. 330 NA horsepower, nice handling, comfortable.

This will be the first time without a 911 in over 15 years. My son now has my SC. I retire in 6 years and may look for a 997.2 when that happens. On the other hand, I may not own a Porsche newer than the early 70's again. Other than my wife's Macan. 1st world problems for sure. Sorry for the long winded post. Just reminiscing after walking away from this car for the last time.

Anyone else ever sell a car to a friend because he asked? I'm really hoping the engine doesn't grenade on him after 3 months. We both said, if you have a question about something, call. If it breaks, call your mechanic :-)

Damn, I should have asked before your bud... I really like those and that looks like a nice example.
Cool for you to do that for a friend.

I have a low mileage Infiniti (Skyline) G37S sport (I bought out of Japan, 350HP) and have sometimes thought of buying a C4S instead - but never got to finally do it.
I would be really interested in your comparison between the 2 cars. Keep posting your findings.

In response to your question:

I sold a Series 1 E Type Jaguar to a friend that persistently asked; about 40 years ago. I was sad for a while for what he did to it maintenance wise. It was my baby & as a single guy I had my share of good times in it. He didn't.

Love it. I know you'll miss this one, too. Mine has the Sport Techno wheel option, and it really sets the car apart!

Both sound like nice cars but I have a feeling your car repair bills just went down while his went up.

Beautiful car.

I bought my 1996 Land Cruiser from one of my best friends - he was a little reluctant at first but I promised him I understand the age, mileage (very low) and overall condition and was willing to fix what breaks.

That and he was moving to Florida.

Sold Shaun our '84 M491 coupe after he posted a rant about sellers lying about what they had and trying to rip him off. Poor guy was just looking for The Right 911, so I sent a PM and we made a deal.

He didn’t ask, but he needed the car more than I did.

When I returned from Iraq, late 2003 my First Sergeant helped me “get back into the swing of things.”

Early 2004 his 1968 Mercedes sedan died. He had a young family and finances were tight. He couldn’t afford the repairs. I was using my 1983 944 as a daily driver and decided to give him a 1989 Audi 100 sedan I wasn’t using.

He offered to give me his Mercedes, in trade. I told him sell it and keep the money. He was shocked but I told him “no big deal, besides maybe someday someone will give me a better car than I gave you.” Nowadays I think it is called it is called paying it forward.

He used the Audi for four years until he could get ahead of the curve.

As for me, the next year (2005) a friend gave me her recently passed mom’s 1975 911S Targa roller. (Pulled head stud in the 2.7)

I was still “dealing” with the war and restoring the Targa is just what I needed at the time.

In hindsight, I can say I got the better end of the deal.

Same car, 5 years later. . .

We drove the G37 approximately 500 miles over a couple of days after trading cars. It is in amazing condition. As I've researched these it has become apparent many are owned by "modders". Even the sedans. The power is good. Trans shifts well for an auto. It's no PDK but I didn't expect that. I haven't played around with the sports mode much. The handling is terrific for a bone stock sports sedan. It takes a nice set in a turn. Doesn't hunt at all on the highway so you can relax a bit. The awd is rear wheel biased to 100% unless slip is detected. The interior is not modern german or even lexus nice but it has held up really well. The seats are terrific other than the thigh bolsters are a bit tight for me. I need to research that a bit. Overall I'm quite impressed given this would sell for under $20k.

The Jag story brings back memories. Years ago we moved to Colorado for a while. My then wife delivered our low mile, special order black interior 85 Series III XJ to her Dad for safekeeping. I didn't buy it new but it was a find. Amazing condition.
He apparently misunderstood, or I did, our arrangement. I thought we'd get it back 1 1/2 years later when we moved back. Nope. He kept for roughly 8 years and when I did get it back it was a POS. It had sat, a lot. It was outside much of the time. 0 maintenance done.......

Nope, never sold a car to a friend. I'm reluctant to sell a tool to a friend. Some things need to be avoided.
