Woops

Jay tries to brush it off and makes a few good humor comments...But you can clearly see he's shook up and a little pissed off.

greglepore 06-27-2016 08:35 AM

Posted in another thread. He's really lucky he didn't lose an arm. Window nets or arm restraints...

masraum 06-27-2016 08:42 AM

Glad no one was hurt, but man, that's REALLY a shame for that to have happened to such an iconic car. That guy is very perky for an 80 year old. I hope I'm doing as well when I'm his age.

sand_man 06-27-2016 09:29 AM

Sheeesh, that was pretty violent! Some lucky guys, there!

KevinP73 06-27-2016 10:42 AM

Heavily edited. The car really only made one full rotation which may be why Jay can still hold a beer while waving to the crowd. The whole stunt was poorly organized. Not enough run off, bumpy surface, car not set up for passengers. Very lucky to have not ended in a tragedy. Notice that the entire "safety response team" was a track worker in a pick up truck ?

sugarwood 06-27-2016 11:36 AM

I agree that stunt was poorly designed. I think the infield pavement was bumpy, and maybe that's what caused the rear to start bouncing. I think this affected his braking. Driver appears to cut the wheel hard and then lock up the brakes. 50 years experience drag racing, zero years experience driving fast

Wow. Looks like my last time doing DE instructing.

asphaltgambler 06-27-2016 02:42 PM

Why the h3ll were they taking a 1/4 drag / wheelie car in the infield of a circle track? I mean what could go wrong? I just can't imagine why they would pick that place - that car is no toy as well as historic piece of drag racing history.

sand_man 06-27-2016 02:52 PM

Seemed like a total amateur mistake the way the driver steered the car with the rear wheels hopping like that...keeping in mind the location of the engine. If it can go wrong it will...

asphaltgambler 06-27-2016 02:56 PM

Pretty sure the car does not have front brakes........................................

Bit short of track to do wheelstands on.

URY914 06-27-2016 03:14 PM

Drag racers can't do corners.

Scheduling error/conflict with the drag strip. Riggle wasn't real happy with the circumstances but didn't want to disappoint Leno. You can almost see it in his face when it all comes to a stop. You can bet one of Leno's producers is updating his/her resume as we speak.

On a side note: That car is NOT the original "Hurst Hemi Under Glass" as campaigned back in the day, it's a copy of the original which is still owned by (Wild) Bill Shrewsberry .

Now, what have we learned about wrinklewalls?

sand_man 06-27-2016 04:07 PM

Not evident in my previous comment, but I do feel bad for the driver!!! We all have bad days. We all get caught out. We don't all end up as fodder on YouTube, and that's gotta be tuff.

I'd be surprised if Leno didn't offer his services and facilities to get this back up and running.

There are at least 4 of them...

Others are in storage.

The on air version has a great voice over from Jay.

"My wife is gonna kill me!" ;)
