A legal opinion please

and of course all responsibility is on me.

I have been the target of ID theft. I recently found out that the alleged perp tried to get my mail forwarded to Brooklyn NY. I have the street address too. So how do I go across jurisdictions to check this out?

I'd say call the appropriate Brooklyn authorities...or if really unsure, contact an attorney there and ask how to proceed.

I looked it up on google maps and it appears to be a nice neighborhood.

I'd contact the postal service to start off. They would know how to handle this and could advise you.

Lot of scammers out there.....good luck!

I don't think the popo in the destination city will do anything. They don't have a valid reason to investigate.

Start with USPS and your local police.

USPS won't care. I have a postal inspector case number as well. It's about as useful as the toilet paper I used earlier today. I even clicked on that box requesting they contact me back....crickets. Good luck, but no one cares. Particularly if no crime was completed.

+1 . We have a thief that's been stealing our mail for 2 years if we leave it in the box overnight. Several calls, no response.

The police certainly don't. Apparently I need to lose a felony amount of money first.

Good God man, don't talk to us, call EVERYONE. Your local police, the Brooklyn police, the Post Office, a lawyer, and Chuck Norris.
The quicker you move the better chance you have.

If damages are below legal limit for small claims ct, and he is stupid enough to live at that address, file an action in sm claims ct. Don't need lawyer, won't cost much.

Then try to get it moved to Judge Judy or Hot Bench, and let us know when it airs.....

From personal experience, 4 grand doesn't trigger that threshold, apparently.

Trust me on this Tom, just lock up your credit and move on. I spent a couple of weeks fretting and being pissed about my ID theft, even fantasizing about a few "Taken" type scenarios. I soon found out that I was the only one losing sleep over this crap, it's so prevalent LEO and CC companies won't touch it. It sucks but it is what it is.

Local police, IRS, FTC, the bank, Social Security, USPS, my retirement fund manager, all three credit bureaus and my stock fund manager have all been notified. NYPD couldn't care less. Do you have Chuck's number?
