There's a reason they call this the silly season in the NHL

Another blockbuster! Habs trade Subban to Preds for Weber – ProHockeyTalk

I'm happy for the Preds they got a great player.
I'm happy for Subban. A great guy that got delivered from being a Hab.
Condolences to Weber.

In other news, Chiarelli (the idiot that GAVE AWAY Tyler Seguin) traded Taylor Hall for Adam Larson. He just keeps on going. Glad he isn't ruining the B's any longer.

Now he has traded the #1 and the #2 pick from 2010. Eric Gudbranson is next, he was #3.

And Stamkos resigned in Tampa....

I've read that Subban didn't play well with others. That was prolly the major motivator for the trade. Interesting because usually the GM will fire the coach before dumping a star player: Capitals, Pens just to name a few.

Bit of 'tude, fer sher. The fans loved him though, probably a coaching nightmare. Heard one fan refer to this as the worst trade of all time in the NHL. Obviously this guy wasn't a fan in the Pocklington/Gretzky Oilers era. Canadian politicians tried to block that trade.

It was primarily a style of play issue. High risk high reward (PK) versus plodding stay at home dull and boring.

Coaches and GM don't like risk. Fans do. Management won.

But the Oilers won one more Stanley Cup after Gretzky left. Somehow I don't see Montreal winning the cup while Subban is still playing.

Yeah, that high risk high reward style of play didn't work well for Jaromir Jagr either (although he did terrible when he was a Bruin because his style didn't fit the team). Yes, i know Jagr was offense. Shayne Gostisbehere with the Flyers won't get anywhere with that style either.
It all depends on the team dynamic.

That said, I still am surprised that they dumped a high profile, incredibly liked and respected talent (again, look at Ovi and the Caps for starters).

Look up the Fenwick numbers of the players you listed. It's a stat driven league now.

You can argue for any 'style' of hockey you want, but the GM sets the course. It appears Bergevin wants to smother teams with good defence and the best goalie. He can't re-sculpt the anemic offence with one trade, but he can alter the defensive mindset by sending PK packing.
