Paul, as far as a keyboard, almost any Bluetooth keyboard will work. The Apple Bluetooth keyboard will work just fine with a iPad or iPhone or non Apple device. It is just a Bluetooth device and pretty much universal. It is not real handy to carry around but that is what I had when we came to visit and used it with that tablet computer I have.

As far as accessing additional media there are two approaches.

Portable WIFI enabled drives. One nice thing they do is backup which can be handy but it's another device you need to carry / keep charged.
Wireless: Mobile Storage For All of Your Devices| Seagate

The other option is basically intelligent thumb drives.
Pros, small, portable, no charging necessary, lightning on one end and standard USB on the other. Cons, smaller storage capacity than a wifi drive, cost per MB is higher.
Leef iBridge Mobile Memory This one may have case interference issues but if not does not add bulk to the iPhone profile

A bit bulkier option. Review: iXpand Flash Drive adds easy-to-use extra storage to your iPad and iPhone | Macworld

If you are going to rip dvds for use on a portable device, iOS or Android, get Handbrake, https://handbrake.fr/ Free, open source, stable, been around forever. Use the built in device profiles to generate files appropriate for the target device. The profile for an iPhone will yield a file smaller than the profile for an AppleTV but the picture will still be quality.

Excellent, thanks.

I do have an intelligent thumb drive I will have to try and make work. That or I will get the leef.

Thanks again...I feel so stupid about this stuff and really appreciate your (and others) insight.

The 32GB Leef at $70 is cheap enough to take a flyer on.

The Leef and Sandisk add their own app that makes file management easier and in can be set to change the default storage location of photos / videos you take with the phone to use external vs internal storage.

You're average full length movie when ripped for an iPhone profile will come in at ~500-700MB.

You could load up 30 movies with room to spare.

DVD's are easy to rip using Handbrake, Blu-Ray is another story all together, I don't bother with them.

An easy cheap way to get content is rent a Redbox, (DVD) for $1.00 bring it home, rip it, return.

I've been perfectly happy with a 6 too.
My wife still has her 5 and is content with it too. Word is that the 7 will have an improved camera if that's important to you.
When the new models come out the prices on previous fall considerably. That should be with the case with the 7 soon.

I'm really old school here. I have an iPhone 6 for about 6 months. Prior to that I had a Blackberry for almost 6 years. That phone was indestructible and IMO, the best business phone you could ask for. I don't need a jillion aps. When I got the iPhone, I struggled to use it. The best feature on this is the camera. I use the camera all of the time and just not for personal use. I'm not in rush to go out and buy the latest and greatest. But, I have a 28 yr old who will rush out to buy the latest. As proud as I was to show him my iPhone 6, he already purchased a 6s. Having the latest gadgetry defines his generation. Now on the flip side, I have a 22 yr old who could care less - he is somewhere in between his brother and me.

That's coming in the next iOS release. We'll finally be able to remove some of apple's crap apps.

I buy new iPhones solely for the upgraded cameras in each new model. I often find myself without one of my nice Sony cameras, so I have to rely on the phone camera. I hate hate hate poor photos. The iPhone cameras are getting very good.
