If the dog could talk.....

Took my daughter's dog for his last ride in my pickup today.

If he could talk would he say "Why didn't you let me go a few weeks ago before it got this bad?"

Or would he say "Please not yet. Give me another week or so to lay in the sun"

We'll never know........

That is the tough time we all go through when it's time to say goodbye to a long loved pet...

Sorry for your loss.
It's hard to know when it's time. Our last dog was the hardest. We had made several appointments with the vet and cancelled them all. In the end she passed on her own.
I'm sure your daughters dog was well loved and is resting in peace now.

I'm sorry for your loss. If I've learned anything about dogs, it is that they live in the moment. Everything we think of as "time" is "now" for them. His last thought was the love you were giving him at the moment.

It's tough to make the call. We had to put down a cat about a week ago, and our dog is getting close. Very close.
It's all about being realistic and humane.
A good friend had his dog go from happy go lucky pampered hound to critical malignant tumor in the span of a week. He went and got some big old burgers, went to the park for a final feast and good by and the next day it was across the rainbow bridge. We should all be so lucky to have such a good life, and send off into the next.

After having been through this a few times now, I can look back and say that I didn't do it too soon. A few times I've prayed for another day or a miracle, probably more for my sake other than the cat or dog.

man, that sux. I have a vet buddy who's practice is mobile as he can not afford to set up a full operation here in the bay area. his most called upon service pretty much is dedicated to home euthanasia of pets. he is in high demand as his client's and their animals can share the final send off in familiar surroundings while grieving in private at home. I hate the recall of putting down my old yeller dartis at a vet's place. laying on that unfamiliar, cold floor under florescent lights as he expired haunts me to this day. ive had two cats & a dog put down on my kitchen floor with in home euthanasia, it works. you still cry, but in familiar surroundings.

Condolences. Both my dogs lived long lives before I had to have them put down. My first dog the hardest on me. She lived for over 17 years, she was old enough her organs were just shutting down. Had her on meds to help but it was just time. My second dog was sadder, she got an inoperable tumor and became unable to move her rear legs or control herself. Did all I could be she got to where she wouldn't eat. Both dogs quit eating several days before I had to have them put down, so figure they were ready to go.

Spent 3 months missing the first dog before I got another one. After the second dog I went out and got a new puppy the next day. Helped a bunch.

Condolences; this is very very hard - its the only trouble with dogs / cats they dont live long enough.

I seem to be the one in the family to take the family pets on their final journey (this includes grown up children!) I remember the last moments for all our beloved pets.

Anything else & I am too old - stupid - male to take any notice of.

Who deals with the corpse? When we had our lab put down on Mother's Day many years ago the only Vet we could find had us come to his home. I had no clue that he wouldn't deal with the 100 pound corpse that was in my pickup. Trying to lift a dead creature was something I had never experienced. We ended up burying him on our property.

My condolences. It's not an easy time but know he had a good life.

Mom's 17yo lab was gone before his head touched the table.
Some fight it, and some are ready to go.

Tuff times. So sorry for your loss. As said above I find its best to go right out and get another. They add so much to our lives.

I rarely comment on threads like this because it reminds me that the first dog I had was lost... So I never got to see him grow old. Still it was a good six years...
