so what's it worth ? Old 300 amp welder

My dad passed away in 1996 and one of the items I have held onto is an old 300 amp stick welder.........the old grey box . I remember him teaching me how to weld with it as a kid and that's why I have hung on to it. But the thing is just in the way in the garage and my gas welder and mig welder are fine for what I do. So I'm thinking about selling it on CL . Any idea what these old machines sell for ? Comes with cables that are 10 - 15 ' long. The thing is HEAVY so must have a lot of copper or steel in it .The last time I used it was at least 15 years ago but it worked fine then. I remember cutting steel with it when set to 300 amps.........no problem striking an arc at that setting !

What is the supply voltage?

You will have a hard time getting $100 for it IMO. No one wants a stick welder.

Scrap copper my be the best route.

Make the cables into a set of jumper cables.

Depends on brand and if it has DC or is just an AC buzz box.

These were made with all copper windings unlike the aluminum windings used later. Useful for welding up cattle guards made from railroad rails around here. Probably has an infinite duty cycle. I'd be right over to pick it up if I were closer.

Lincoln Idealarc Machine

I had an mid 60's Idealarc Tig-300 like the one pictured below before it was lost in a barn fire. Weighed about 900 lbs, but surprisingly had very little copper in it to salvage-mostly steel and aluminum. Compare that to a 90's Miller Syncrowave 250 that weighs around 400 lbs to a current Miller Dynasty 280 Tig machine that weighs 52 lbs! But then it also retails for $4750! Ouch!

Those old boxes are indestructible. You won't get much for it, but to the right person you'll make them very happy. It'll be someone that does big iron - like I beams, etc. I think it' a shame to cut up a working tool - even if it's got very limited appeal. If it was fried, then scrap metal is a good solution, but if it works, someone can use it.

It is basically worth scrap metal, or whatever somebody will pay for it

I just bought 200A chinese combined AC/DC/Plasma/Stick/TIG welder. It weights little (ITGB design), does what it says on the box and is rather cheap...

Old transformer-based welding machines aren't really sought after nowadays.

It is 220 ac voltage and I will keep it rather than have it go for scrap metal. I'll take a pic or two and throw it on CL and see if any bites. It is only costing me space in the garage. I think you could weld a bridge or locomotive with it !
