Had a deep dental cleaning today.

Gums are a bit tender so my thoughtful wife just gave me some salt water.

With the salt separate from the water, plus lime, and agave, and tequila, to swish around.

She's the best.

Carry on.

Nothing more to see here.

I went 24 years without a dentist's visit or checkup or anything. I think I had 1 or 2 cavities, and they replaced a metal filling with one of the other ones. They were shocked that not only did I not need a "deep cleaning" but there was hardly any tartar/plaque to scrape/clean. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that has the right kind of chemistry that I just don't develop plaque.

One of my cousins is, I think, a dental hygienist. She occasionally posts videos on facebook where the teeth look armor plated because there's so much plaque.

Margaritas? You need some Grand Marnier in that thing. Best 'rita ever, good tequila, lime/sour of choice, Grand Marnier on the rocks.

I go three times a year, we have a good dental plan.
I have two tiny molar fillings from when I was a kid.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

Back in NY I went three times a year.

Had a great dentist. Used to ride my ass to the point that after a couple of last minute cancellations due to my schedule he started making appointments directly through my admin.

He would call her and have her put him on my schedule. They basically cut me out of the loop.

I'm one of those high maintenance patients that needs that kind of attention.

Moved down here and started using the place my wife and kids found.

It's a cool facility but it was too "assembly line" for me.

They can see like 30 or more people at a time.

Every time you go in there you get someone different.

That did not work for me and I slacked off to once a year at best.

Got fed up as I knew I was not taking care of myself the way I needed so finally did what I should have done.

Interviewed a bunch of local dentists and found a guy right around the corner.

He understands I'm high maintenance and was OK with it.

Been in a few times to "catch up" on lost time and so far I've dealt with the same tech.

She's been "assigned to me". We get along, she listens to me, understands my quirks and I'm about as happy about going to the dentist as one can be.

The trifecta is two buildings to the left is my Vet and one building to the left is my GP.

Very convenient.

Had a deep root planing a couple of months ago. I HATE novacaine. Hate being numb long after the procedure. I've had quite a bit of dental work done with not anesthesia at all. They used some sort of gel for the deep cleaning, but that was it. Wasn't nearly as bad as having a filling done without chemical help. They offered NOs, but that wouldn't have been covered by insurance so I passed.

I avoid novocaine for the same reason.

Only needed the topical.

For me it's that fricken sonic thing they use while cleaning.

The pitch just gets inside my head and no amount of numbing helps.

It's like a thousand nails on a thousand chalk boards all at once.

Don't know what the deal is with the hygienist that cleans my teeth. Every time she looks into my mouth she says, "Ummm, tight gums!"

I lived like that for a while. I felt like a machine; wind me up and point me to where I'm supposed to be next.

Except for one visit to one of those assembly-line, strip mall dental clinics I've always gone to a private practice dentist. Every visit we chat, catch up on each other's lives, BS about politics and sports. I hope I never have to go back to one of those assembly line places.

It's better than NOs. I had gas once, and I started hallucinating. I could see my face turning black and liquefying. It was running down off my skull. They had to cancel the surgery.
I'm never letting them give me NOs gas again.

From a biased source...

Quote:
Several studies have shown that people with periodontal disease may be more likely to have coronary artery disease than people with healthy mouths.

Right now, scientists have two possible explanations for this association. One is that the bacteria that cause periodontal disease can release toxins into or travel through the bloodstream and help to form fatty plaques in the arteries. These plaque deposits can lead to serious problems, such as blood clots, which can block blood flow.

The other explanation is that these bacteria cause the liver to make high levels of certain proteins, which inflame the blood vessels. Inflammation eventually could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

In 47 years, I have never had a cavity. And then I found myself without a dentist. And then for whatever reason, stopped getting my bi-annual checkups/cleanings; something I have always been religious about. And then yesterday, I found myself getting my first root canal!!! 3 hours in the chair while they chased down four roots in a molar. Better than I thought it was gonna be, but I am sore and achey today. I think I will add some tequila to my saltwater rinse!

The ultrasonic water blaster can be rough. Skipped going to the Dentist for about 4 years quite a while back. She hit me with the water tool. Then she stopped for a minute and exclaimed "Oh look!" I said "what?" and she stuck her finger in my mouth and retrieved a very small black hard as rock nugget. Showed it to me on the end of her finger. I told her "you have absolutely no idea how long I've been looking for that!"

She punched me in the arm and kept on with the blasting.

I've had the same dentist and hygienist since I moved to AZ....in '98!

I guess I'm lucky with a reasonably "good" chemistry such that I have yet to need the "deep cleaning".

That's probably offset by the 5 years of braces and the four wisdom teeth being extracted with nothing but a local anesthetic.

Any dentists here? I knocked a chunk off of a tooth a few years ago. Out of curiosity I looked at it under my dissecting microscope. It had little red spots in it. Is that normal for tooth material?

Cool. Now do the periodontal maintenance q3-4m and you'll likely never need scaling and root planing again.

Tequila sounds good. Unfortunately the dye studies show rinses only get 0.2mm into a periodontal pocket.
