Help needed fast - health related
My wife was bitten just above her knee by some kind of insect three days ago. It was a little spot that itched. It grew and developed a biister, the blister broke and now it even bigger with another blister. Should we go to urgent care, or is this going to go away on its own?

Go to the MD NOW!
Take care of the problem before it becomes a big problem... Or put some Neosporin on it and watch for a day...and if it doesn't start to get better go directly to the MD and do not pass go. Probably a spider... Some 25 years ago I had a spider bite behind the knee ...it itched and it grew and grew puffing up my knee and was ouzzing nasty stuff...so I went to the MD before it got really bad, got a prescription for antibiotics and it cleared up... Since then I pay attention and do not take insect bites for granted. They can be dangerous and even life threatening.

Quick! Get on the internet and ask some strangers!
Yes, of course go to the urgent care. Spend $50 and find out from a doctor. Okay maybe $100.

My wife is currently treating with antibiotics a spider(?) bite on her calf that has become an absess with redness all around. She finally went to the doctor yeaterday and had some cultures taken to determine if it was a spider or MRSA which could be a possability.....very similar looking wound.

Ugghh. Looks like we'll be headed back to the highway to find a town big enough to have a Doc-In-A-Box. This day is shot to hell. Hope the whole weekend isn't.

Or if you're like me, you'll self diagnose on the Internet for a few days first. Doesn't look life threatening so you may want to stop by a drug store and ask the pharmacist how to treat. If it doesn't itch yet, I bet it will. Hope she's ok soon.

Im all for caution, but personally I would not be running to an ER for a blister smaller than a dime.

My wife had what looked like a spider bite like that a couple years ago, ended up being mrsa, doctors cant tell the difference, thats why they take cultures, and usually since they arent sure, give you 2 different kinds of antibiotics, a fungal base, and a sulfur base (sulfur works on the mrsa) My intention is not to alarm you, but its worth the time & headache to get to an urgent care as soon as possible. If it is mrsa, this may sound wierd, but copper will kill it on contact, dont use a penny, use something that is pure copper. |

They have brown recluse in your neck of the woods too Aschen. Had a gal from Spring with a bite on the top of her foot that started looking like something out of Evil Dead in just a few days.
Have her take some benadryl now, and get thee to the McDoctor. When it starts to break down, and it will, go to CVS and get some of their store brand medihoney. If it is getting indurated(hard) in the surrounding area, try a Koch Mason dressing. Take a cloth you are willing to discard, or some gauze, moisten it and cover the wound, wrap a dry towel over that, then secure using saran wrap, not too tight. Change about every twelve hours, there will be some nasty looking stuff on the cloth against the wound.

Well, hours later, we got to a Doc-In-A-Box in Milwaukee. The doc said it is an infected insect bite and gave her oral antibiotics. Says it should get better in a couple of days and can take 10 days to go away. I am impressed with Aurora Medical here in Milwaukee.
I like most of Wisconsin, but Milwaukee traffic and streets suck. I would never come to this city voluntarily. Blew off today's fun at Road America. Tomorrow is another day.

I'm glad it turned out to be something easy to treat. I did a bunch of mileage runs to MKE about 4 years ago (like 5 trips from LAX in 2 days) and really liked pounding the pavement around town. Found a cool deli and a vintage motorcycle shop with a bunch of RD's in the window.

Only an internet doc here, but pay attention to that red ring.
Draw a line around it with a fine sharpie. If it goes past that (or other swelling pain etc) start pulling out the red phone. Blister on the surface is the body externalizing the gunk. For now.. |
