If I was a criminal this is the place I'd rob next

Sheriff: Restaurant owner told his deputies law enforcement no longer welcome - AOL

Quote:
This afternoon 4 Skagit County Sheriff's office deputies were finishing up lunch at Lucky's. As 2 deputies went up to pay they were informed by by the owner that he requested they not eat there anymore. They were told that other customers didn't like law enforcement there. My chief deputy spoke to the owner to confirm this because he simply could not believe what he was hearing. The owner not only repeated the request but asked that we spread the word to other law enforcement that they were no longer welcome either.
I'm not a criminal nor am I advocating crime. I just have a feeling that this place may not get a quick response if he called for help. I wish I lived near by so I could drop in to say they'd never see another dollar from me.

Yeah... any criminal robbing that place would have hit the jackpot.

I almost feel bad for those idiot owners...

As usual, there is more to the story.

Essentially, a misunderstanding complicated by a language barrier and the viral nature of the internet. Once the sheriff and owner communicated directly, the issue was resolved--owner apologized and the sheriff was satisfied it was all a misunderstanding and hoped the business would not suffer.

Yeah, more to the story.

Owner does not want cops around, and the story takes off. Owner looks bad, walks back stupid statements, Sheriff accepts his apology

I'd hate to be that owner and have to call 911 when seconds count. The cops will be many minutes away, probably eating at a competitor's restaurant.

I heard on the radio, just this morning, that the Chick-fil-a located here in Midtown Atlanta, on Peachtree St, has an excellent discount program for anyone in law enforcement. 100% discount for any LEOs in uniform. I have a difficult time thinking they will ever have a problem with slow response time...

What sort of person/business owner would announce that they didn't want LE in their place?

I worked graveyard shift at 7-11 the summer before college and we didn't charge cops for coffee. I was always happy to have them hanging around the store at those hours.

I went to 7-11 for coffee once and got in line behind a cop buying donuts. Clerk told him no charge. Cop said here, take this anyway and paid for my coffee!

Yes, excellent question. You're talking about motive.

I posted a link that sheds light on a possible answer to that question--no one would, so there might be more to the story.

Tobra posted an alternative explanation, just as valid for the incident but does not address your question, directly.

People are free to read all sides of the situation and form their own opinions about this particular incident.

BTW, the owner offered free meals to all LE in the future. The sheriff declined the offer as it would be against department policy for officers to be given free anything by any business.

And some people choose to eat up the owner's excuses hook, line, and sinker.

I read the article in the link and understood how it could have been a misunderstanding/communication problem.

So the employee thought the spilling soup were mad because they were sitting by LE?

Obviously, language was a barrier but why would he/she just assume that?

It looks like it's resolved and everything worked out.

So... you are all okay with LEO's being selective about who they protect?
Suppose they have a 'slow response time' when this guy gets robbed and the bad guys get away.
Then same bad guys rob you?

Why the H.... would most of you think the cops would deliberately slow the response.

Most cops that I've heard of would go to great lengths to respond quickly, no matter who.

You all are putting the cops on the same low rung as the owner.

I call bull. There was no "misunderstanding":
Quote:
The sheriff said his chief deputy called the owner later Thursday and that the request was confirmed along with a request to spread the word among other law enforcement agencies.
The Chief verified what was said to the deputies before making the info public. He was repeatedly questioned after the news broke and was adamant that there was NO language barrier when he was told to stay away.

IMO, the owner didn't think this would be made public and realized he screwed up big time so he back-peddled to save his business.
